Central Squad Comes Out on Top at NA3HL Top Prospects Tournament

In NAHL's prospects tournament, South and Selects Blue go 2-0

The Central Division scored at least five goals in each game while going 3-0 to finish with the best record in the North American 3 Hockey League Top Prospects Tournament Monday and Tuesday in Attleboro, Massachusetts.

Central beat Coastal, 5-3, and West, 5-2, on Monday. It then wrapped up a perfect record with a 6-4 win over Frontier on Tuesday.

Jack Radley from the Peoria Mustangs scored two goals, including the first of the game against Frontier.

Justin Schwartzmiller from the Wisconsin Whalers scored twice in each of Monday’s wins.

The West went 2-1, finishing with Tuesday’s 4-0 victory over Northeast.

Jacob Halvorson from the New Ulm Steel scored twice, and Kyle Hayden from the Alexandria Blizzard had the shutout.

NAHL PROSPECTS

The South Division and the Selects Blue team each went 2-0 in the NAHL Top Prospects Tournament.

The South shut out the Selects Red, 4-0, then edged the Midwest, 2-1, in overtime.

Logan Jenuwine had four points for the South, sharing the lead in the event.

Emil Gransoe from the Topeka Pilots and Leo Chuard from the Shreveport Mudbugs followed with 13 in the opening shutout.

Frank Trazzera from the Lone Star Brahmas scored the overtime goal against the Midwest.

Jenuwine assisted both goals.

Gransoe made nine more saves, finishing the event unscored upon with 21 saves.

The Selects Blue defeated Midwest, 6-2, and East, 5-1, and also got four points from Carson Briere.

Briere, from the Johnstown Tomahawks, and who committed to Arizona State following the tournament, and Colin Schmidt from the Jamestown Rebels each had three points against Midwest.

Ethan Haider from the Minnesota Magicians stopped all 28 shots he faced from the East Tuesday and finished unscored upon with 45 saves in the tournament.

Dylan Johnson from the Minnesota Wilderness had an overtime game-winning goal to lead the Central past the Selects Red, 5-4.

Matt Rutigliano from the Northeast Generals and Auggie Moore from Jamestown scored 46 seconds apart in the third period to lift East over Central, 2-1.

STORMING ALONG

Ronnie Attard from the Tri-City Storm set the United States Hockey League Tier 1 era (2002-present) record for goals by a defenseman in a season. With goals in games Saturday and Sunday, Attard has 20 on the season.

Eddie Del Grosso from the Indiana Ice in 2005-06, then Blake Kessel from the Waterloo Black Hawks and Matt Donovan from the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders had scored 19 goals in each of the next two seasons.

Attard, a Western Michigan commit from White Lake, Michigan, leads the USHL in plus/minus at plus-40.

Teammate Brendan Furry had eight points in three games as the Storm ran its winning streak to five games.

Furry had his first USHL hat trick, along with an assist, in Sunday’s 6-3 win over the Waterloo Black Hawks.

BUSY GOALIE

Malachi Albrecht from the Walpole Express had a 52-save shutout for the Walpole Express in a 3-0 Eastern Hockey League victory over the New Hampshire Avalanche.

ONE-TIMERS

Bake Pietila won twice, allowing just three goals on 55 shots, to help Cedar Rapids extend its USHL winning streak to four games. … The Fargo Force has won six straight after Bobby Brink scored to extend his point streak to a USHL season-high 17 games in a 3-2 win over the Sioux City Musketeers. … Nate Reid from the Fairbanks Ice Dogs made 36 saves while posting back-to-back NAHL shutouts. … Christian DiCesare, a 20-year-old defenseman from Morristown, New Jersey, playing with the USHL’s Omaha Lancers, has committed to play at the University of Notre Dame. … The second-year Seahawks Hockey Club clinched its first EHL playoff berth, improving from 14-30-6 in their debut to 24-13-4 so far this season. … Kyle Konin is 8-1 with a 1.93 goals against average and .938 save percentage since joining the EHL’s Vermont Lumberjacks last month.
