Jackson Perbix Takes Over Gamblers Scoring Lead with Big Weekend

Jackson Perbix scored more goals in two weekend games than he had in his first 34 games this season with the Green Bay Gamblers.              

Perbix took over Green Bay’s points lead by scoring five goals in a pair of United States Hockey League games against the Lincoln Stars.               

The 18-year-old from Elk River, Minnesota, had two goals in Friday’s 4-3 shootout victory, then did all his team’s scoring in Saturday’s 7-3 loss.               

Perbix is tied for 11th in the USHL in assists with 22. He extended his scoring streak to six games in which he has seven of his nine goals on the season. He also has five assists during the streak.               

A fourth-round pick by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2018 National Hockey League Entry Draft, Perbix is committed to the University of Minnesota.

EXTENDED SHOOTOUT: The Tri-City Storm and Sioux City Musketeers needed 16 rounds to settle their shootout Sunday.               

The teams were tied 2-2 at the end of regulation and the five-minute, sudden-death overtime period.               

Connor McMenamin opened the shootout by scoring for Tri-City.            

Then goals became difficult to come by.               

Brady Smith kept Sioux City in the game by scoring on the third attempt in the opening set of three tries.               

Both goalies then stopped 12 attempts in a row in the sudden-death portion of the shootout. Asa Kinnear scored on Tri-City’s 16th attempt and Jake Barczewski made one last stop to secure the win.               

Sioux City’s Ben Kraws saved 34 of 36 shots, then made 14 stops in a row during the shootout.

STREAKING ALONG: Chicago captain Matteo Pietroniro, a defenseman, scored goals in all three games as the Steel ran their winning streak to seven games.               

Pietroniro leads USHL defensemen with 14 goals. He had the game-winner in Sunday’s 4-2 victory over the Fargo Force.              

Nick Abruzzese had two goals in Sunday’s win.               

MOVING UP: Defenseman C.J. Regula had a goal and six assists while going plus-6 when the Shreveport Mudbugs won three games to take over sole possession of second place in the North American Hockey League South Division.               

Regula had three-point games in a 6-3 win over the Lone Star Brahmas and an 8-2 romp over the Topeka Pilots. In between, he had an assist while helping the Mudbugs shut out the Brahmas, 3-0.

HOT GOALIE: Nathan Pickett won his fourth game in the last eight days and his eighth straight over the past 17 days Wednesday when he led the New Hampshire Avalanche to a 5-1 Eastern Hockey League victory over the Boston Junior Rangers.              

Pickett is 18-1 on the season helping the Avalanche close in on a North Division title with a 29-5-0-0 record.               

During his last five games, Pickett has allowed just five goals for a 1.00 goals against average and .956 save percentage.               

On the season, Pickett leads the EHL with a .942 save percentage, ranks second in wins and in GAA (1.66) and is fourth in shutouts (three).               

COACHING MILESTONE: Brad Willner picked up his 500th career coaching victory in USA Hockey-sanctioned junior leagues Saturday night when the Granite City Lumberjacks defeated the Breezy Point North Stars in a North American 3 Hockey League game.               

Willner is in his 10th season with the Lumberjacks. His wins include the NA3HL, NAHL and the defunct Minnesota Junior Hockey League.               

During his career, Willner has won four league championships. He was the NA3HL General Manager of the Year for the 2011-12 season.               

ONE-TIMERS: Gavin Bulash had two points in each game Friday and Saturday, finishing with three goals, including a game-winner, and an assist when the New Jersey Titans swept an NAHL home-and-home with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights. … Daniels Leja had back-to-back hat tricks for the EHL’s New Jersey 87s. … The Texas Brahmas ran their NA3HL winning streak to 13 games when Jack Cooper scored two second-period goals in Friday’s 5-3 win over the Atlanta Capitals, but had the streak end the next night when Atlanta won, 3-1.
