Elsewhere in USHL, Capitols mount major comeback against Flying Aces

United States Junior Select Team alumnus Robert Matrosimone tied the game with less than seven minutes left in regulation and Gunnarwolfe Fontaine won it 1:42 into overtime Monday, allowing the Chicago Steel to extend its United States Hockey League winning streak to five games with a 4-3 victory over USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program Under-17 squad.               

Reilly Herbst made 26 saves in the win.

Team USA led 2-0 early in the second period. After Chicago rallied the first time, Thomas Bordeleau had put Team USA ahead 3-2 on a goal 2:01 into the third period.              

The winning streak improved the Steel to 22-12-1-0 and solidified the team’s hold on second place in the USHL Eastern Conference. The Steel are 11 points behind the Muskegon Lumberjacks, who have the league’s best record at 27-7-2-0, but have opened a seven-point lead on the rest of the division.

USHL ROUNDUP: The Madison Capitols scored four third-period goals in Monday’s other game to rally for a 4-3 victory over the Central Illinois Flying Aces.               

Lucas Herrmann, Josh Boyer and Robert Blueger scored within a span of 54 seconds in the final 1:46 to pull out the win.    

Delano, Minnesota, native Ben Meyers had back-to-back, two-goal games for the Fargo Force Friday and Saturday to run his scoring streak to 15 games.               

The University of Nebraska Omaha prospect also had two assists Friday. He leads the league in goals with 24 in 31 games and shares the lead in points with 45. Meyers was selected to USA Hockey’s Boys Select 16 National Player Development Camp in 2015.               

Team USA defenseman Cam York had a seven-point game on a hat trick and four assists Jan. 15 in an 11-3 romp over the Youngstown Phantoms.               

Waterloo Black Hawks goalie Jared Moe (New Prague, Minnesota) sandwiched two shutouts around another win during a five-day stretch last week. Moe had a 0.67 goals against average and a .972 save percentage for the week.

NAHL GOALIES: Goaltenders won three of the four Star of the Week awards in the North American Hockey League.             

Ben Garrity of the Minot Minotauros, Anthony Del Tufo of the Maryland Black Bears and Seth Eisele of the Lone Star Brahmas each won both of their starts.              

Garrity stopped 68 of 70 shots and posted his second shutout of the season.               

Del Tufo allowed just three goals on 63 shots while winning twice, including once in overtime.               

Eisele moved into the No. 1 goalie role when Harrison Feeney made an in-season move to the University of North Dakota. He stopped 66 of 69 shots.               

DEFENDING CHAMPS: The defending Eastern Hockey League champion New Hampshire Avalanche won two more games and continue to lead the New England Conference after improving to 25-5-0-0.               

Jake Adkins had three goals and two assists in the wins.               

ONE-TIMERS: Blake Bennett, a 20-year-old forward from Grand Island, New York, who is the scoring leader for the NAHL’s Corpus Christi Ice Rays, has committed to American International College for the fall … John Keranen of the Minnesota Magicians had three goals, including a game-winner, and four assists in a pair of NAHL victories … The Shreveport Mudbugs ended Lone Star’s six-game winning streak Monday and moved into a second-place tie with the Brahmas in the NAHL South Division … The Great Falls Americans, leaders of the North American 3 Hockey League Frontier Division, stretched their winning streak to nine games with the help of two goals each by Payton McSharry and George Nuutinen in Saturday’s 8-2 victory over the Missoula Junior Bruins … Great Falls and the New England Stars are the two latest teams to clinch NA3HL playoff berths.
