In EHL, Little Flyers score two shutout wins in showcase

The Western Conference-leading Tri-City Storm became the first team this season to sweep the three weekly United States Hockey League awards.

Brendan Furry was named Forward of the Week, Ronnie Attard picked up the award for defensemen and Isaiah Saville was selected among goalies.

The Storm won Friday and Saturday to extend their winning streak to four games, before losing on Sunday. Tri-City is 25-7-1-1 overall.

Saville had a 38-save shutout in Friday’s 3-0 win over the Waterloo Black Hawks.

Furry, from Toledo, Ohio, has 13 points in eight games since joining the Storm from the Omaha Lancers. He had a goal and two assists Friday, then had a goal and three assists in Saturday’s 5-2 win over Waterloo. He had one more assist in Sunday’s 4-2 loss in Omaha.

Attard had a goal and two assists Friday, then added two more assists Saturday and one Sunday. The Western Michigan University commit from White Lake, Michigan, is third among USHL defensemen with 26 points and leads the league in plus-minus at plus-25.

Saville is a University of Nebraska-Omaha commit from Anchorage, Alaska. The former U.S. Junior Select Team goalie is 16-2-1-1 and leads the league in both goals against average (1.64) and save percentage (.939).

EHL SHOWCASE: The Philadelphia Little Flyers posted a pair of shutout wins Saturday and Sunday in the final Eastern Hockey League Showcase of the season in Walpole, Massachusetts.

Brendahn Brawley made 25 saves in a 7-0 win over the Connecticut RoughRiders. Kevin Brown and Dante Gattone scored two goals each.

Thomas McLaron made 21 saves in a 3-0 win over host Walpole. Nick Daluisio had a goal and an assist. Defense was the key for the four teams that went 2-0 at the showcase.

The Seahawks Hockey Club allowed just one goal total in two wins, while the East Coast Wizards and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights gave up a single goal in each game.

STREAKING ALONG: The Central Division-leading Aberdeen Wings extended their North American Hockey League winning streak to 14 games with two wins over the second-place Austin Bruins.

Thomas Rocco had the game-winning goal and an assist in Friday’s 6-3 win, then another goal and assist in Saturday’s 4-3 shootout victory.

PLAYOFF BOUND: The Coastal Division’s top two teams, the Lewiston/Auburn Nordiques and Northeast Generals, have clinched North American 3 Hockey League playoff berths.

The South Division’s four playoff berths are set. The Texas Brahmas, Louisiana Drillers, Atlanta Capitals and Mid-Cities Junior Stars (Euless, Texas) are all at least seven games above .500.

The Northeast Division has just four teams this season, so the Binghamton Junior Senators, Oswego Stampede, Skyland Kings (Stockholm, New Jersey) and Niagara Falls PowerHawks already knew they would participate in the postseason.

LEADERS MEET: The Granite City Lumberjacks used four third-period goals Sunday to beat the St. Louis Junior Blues, 5-2, in a meeting of NA3HL division leaders.

Blake Spetz, from St. Michael, Minnesota, scored twice.

COLLEGE COMMITMENTS: Willie Knierim, a forward with the USHL’s Dubuque Fighting Saints, has signed with Arizona State University.

Knierim, a 20-year-old from Chicago, has 22 points in 31 games with the Fighting Saints this season.

Lone Star Brahmas goalie Harrison Feeney, who won his last four NAHL starts, has committed to report immediately to play for the University of North Dakota.

Feeney, 20, from Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania, has a 1.73 goals against average over two seasons with the team.
