USHL also announces roster for USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game

T.J. Walsh had a pair of two-goal games last week to help the Des Moines Buccaneers win three times and move into a second-place tie in the United States Hockey League’s Western Conference.

Walsh also had an assist Dec. 4. His second goal of that game was the overtime game-winner in a 5-4 victory over the Sioux Falls Stampede.

Des Moines (15-8-1-1) beat the Chicago Steel 3-1 Friday before getting another big game from Walsh the next night.

Walsh scored two more goals in a 3-2 victory over the Lincoln Stars.

The 20-year-old Northeastern University commit from Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, is third in the USHL in assists with 20 and tied for fourth with 29 points. He had four goals in the first six games of the season, went 15 games without a goal and has regained his shooting touch with five goals in the last four games.

Walsh previously played with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders before joining the Buccaneers this season. He has 53 points in 104 career USHL games.

PLANNING AHEAD: The USHL and National Hockey League Central Scouting announced the players selected for the 2019 USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game, scheduled for Jan. 8 in Lincoln, Nebraska.

All 40 players selected for the game are eligible for the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.

The game has featured 90 NHL draft picks, including first-round selections Jordan Schmaltz in 2012, Brock Boeser and Kyle Connor in 2015 and Shane Bowers in 2017.

Of the 40 players selected, 35 have already committed to NCAA Division I schools, including three players each to Michigan State and Western Michigan.

There are players from 12 states — led by nine from Minnesota — and six countries.

NAHL NOTES: Aberdeen Wings goalie Matt Vernon took over the North American Hockey League lead with 16 wins after picking up three more last week.

Vernon stopped 92 of 96 shots, including a 29-save shutout in a 1-0 win over the Minnesota Blizzard.

Nick Seitz has 11 points in 11 games with the Corpus Christi IceRays, including a hat trick in Friday’s 8-2 win over the Odessa Jackalopes.

POWER SHOW: The Philadelphia Little Flyers are back on top of the Eastern Hockey League’s #Eshow Power Rankings.

The Little Flyers beat the Walpole Express 7-1 on Saturday and the Boston Junior Rangers 7-2 on Sunday.

George Vonakis had a goal and seven assists in the two wins, giving him 26 points in 15 games.

Defenseman Zikmund Mroz had four goals and two assists.

COLLEGE COMMITMENTS: Des Moines forward Jonny Russell has committed to play at Brown University.

Russell was the NAHL South Division Forward of the Year last season after scoring 31 goals while playing for the Amarillo Bulls and Lone Star Brahmas. The 20-year-old from Traverse City, Michigan, has two goals and two assists in five USHL games this season.

Taylor Lantz, a forward for the Minot Minotauros of the NAHL, has committed to play at the University of Alaska-Anchorage.

The 20-year-old from Coleraine, Minnesota, is tied for the team lead with 10 goals.
