First-of-its-kind event brings together National Governing Bodies to share technology best practices

USA Hockey hosted a first-of-its-kind NGB Technology Conference at its Colorado Springs headquarters yesterday (Nov. 16).

The event was the brainchild of Doug Ticas, USA Hockey’s new senior director of information technology and designed to bring together sport National Governing Bodies to share best practices in the use of technology.

“It was a great event overall,” said Ticas, who started at USA Hockey in July. “We really didn’t know what the interest level would be like, but it’s safe to say it far exceeded our expectations.

“It will be terrific to utilize the combined knowledge and experience of everyone in attendance to improve our respective sports.”

NGBs that attended were from across the U.S. and included U.S. Figure Skating, USA Football, USA Triathlon, USA Archery, USA Fencing, USA Field Hockey, USA Lacrosse, USA Rugby, USA Shooting, USA Swimming, USA Volleyball, USA Water Ski & Wake Sports, and USA Weightlifting.  In addition, representatives from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency and U.S. Olympic Committee also participated.

Pat Kelleher, executive director of USA Hockey welcomed attendees to begin the proceedings. The full-day program also included presentations from several other USA Hockey staff, including Kevin Erlenbach, who shared details of the organization’s Club Excellence program; Joyce Kulpinski, who discussed SafeSport initiatives and legal issues; Kim Folsom, who presented on member services; and Matt Leaf, who spoke on officiating systems. All presentations showcased the use of technology tied to the specific initiative or topic.

While the event was mainly intended to serve as a resource for NGB technology professionals in the Olympic movement, USA Hockey also welcomed chief executive officers and chief financial officers of some organizations.

“We had a diverse group of attendees,” said Ticas. “It’s great to get this off the ground and our expectations are that it will continue to grow as we move forward.”
