In NAHL, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton keeps up winning streak with Carson Briere’s heroics

Bobby Brink had already produced eight multi-point games, including three straight, when he took the ice Friday night. Then he topped his previous efforts with his first United States Hockey League hat trick to lead the Sioux City Musketeers to a 3-2 victory over the Omaha Lancers.

The 17-year-old from Minnetonka, Minnesota, is second in the USHL in scoring, and his efforts last week earned him selection as USHL Forward of the Week.

A year ago, after attending USA Hockey’s Select 16 Player Development Camp, Brink played 13 games with Sioux City, producing two goals and two assists. Through that same number of games this season, he already has eight goals and 14 assists.

Brink, a University of Denver recruit, had a goal and an assist against the Sioux Falls Stampede Oct. 27 and Waterloo Black Hawks Oct. 30. He then posted two assists in Thursday’s 4-1 win over the Fargo Force the day before his hat trick.

Sioux City is 3-0-1-0 in Brink’s latest multi-point scoring streak to move within one point of the Western Conference lead at 8-4-1-0.

USHL RANKINGS: The Muskegon Lumberjacks (10-1-0-0) and Tri-City Storm (8-1-1-0) moved up from fifth and sixth a month ago to the top two spots in the USA Hockey Magazine November Power Rankings for the USHL.

Sioux Falls (6-1-1-1) is third and Waterloo (6-1-3-1) is fourth.

NAHL STREAK: Carson Briere — son of longtime NHL center Daniel — had two goals and three assists to help the Johnstown Tomahawks beat the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights twice and run their North American Hockey League winning streak to seven games.

The East Division leaders won 5-1 Thursday with the help of two Briere assists. Briere then scored a pair of third-period goals, including the game-winner, and added an assist in a come-from-behind 5-4 victory on Friday.

COLLEGE COMMITMENTS: Recent college commitments from the USHL include Fargo Force defenseman Connor Mayer and Omaha Lancers forward Michael Colella to Colorado College and Dubuque Fighting Saints forward Patrick Smyth headed to Army West Point.

Mayer, a 19-year-old from Champlin, Minnesota, has two goals and two assists in 12 games this season. He is a third-year USHL player, who has also played for the Sioux City Musketeers and Madison Capitols.

Colella, 19, from Turnersville, New Jersey, has two goals and an assist in six games.

Smyth is a 6-foot-4, 226-pound forward from Toledo, Ohio. The 19-year-old has two goals and two assists in 11 games.

Brett Miller, a goaltender for the North American Hockey League’s Austin Bruins, has committed to play at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).

The 19-year-old from Northville, Michigan, ranks second in the NAHL with a 1.66 goals against average to go along with a 4-1-0-2 record and .916 save percentage.

ONE-TIMERS: Green Bay’s Nick Leitner, who is second among USHL defensemen in scoring, was named USHL Defenseman of the Week for the second time in four weeks after going plus-4 with three assists in a pair of Gamblers wins … Seth Eisele of the Lone Star Brahmas made 11 of his 21 saves in the third period Saturday while posting his first NAHL shutout in a 2-0 win over the Topeka Pilots … The Northeast Generals organization promoted 20-year-old Marc Faia to the NAHL after Faia earned NA3HL Forward of the Month for October and Forward of the Week twice during the month while scoring 32 points in 11 games for the Generals’ North American 3 Hockey League team … Kyle McEnany from the Connecticut Chiefs had four goals and assisted another during a 6-3 Eastern Hockey League win over the Connecticut RoughRiders.
