Elsewhere in USHL, Muskegon stays perfect

Evan Fear made 43 saves Sunday and Jesse Tucker scored in the third period as the Green Bay Gamblers handed the Dubuque Fighting Saints their second United States Hockey League loss, 1-0.

The shutout was the first of his USHL career for Fear, a Quinnipiac University commit from Winnetka, Illinois. He improved his save percentage to .924, sixth-best in the USHL.

STILL PERFECT: The Muskegon Lumberjacks improved to 7-0-0-0 in the USHL with Friday’s 5-3 victory over the Chicago Steel.

Michigan native Bobby Lynch had two goals and an assist in the win.

The Lumberjacks have outscored opponents 31-14.

TWO HATS: Greg Simmons had hat tricks Saturday and Sunday to help the Binghamton Junior Senators extend their North American 3 Hockey League winning streak to seven games with a sweep of the Niagara Falls PowerHawks.

Simmons was not alone in lighting up the scoreboard Saturday.

Markus Cook had six goals and Simmons added three in a 14-3 rout.

Zach Bell had eight assists and Thomas Leibold added five.

Simmons scored three times, Liebold added two goals and Jonathan Rapp had an 11-save shutout in Sunday’s 8-0 win.

NAHL STREAK: The Aberdeen Wings are 6-0-1 in their last seven games to move into a tie for the Central Division lead with a weekend sweep of the Chippewa Steel.

Mitch Machlitt had two assists in Friday’s 4-1 win, then had a goal and two assists in Saturday’s 7-1 romp.

EHL ROUNDUP: The New Jersey 87’s beat the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights, 3-2, Oct. 17 for their seventh straight Eastern Hockey League win.

Scott Lawson had two goals and an assist when the Connecticut Chiefs defeated the Connecticut RoughRiders 5-4 in overtime Monday.

Defenseman Blake Halfpenny scored the game-tying and game-winning goals Thursday when the Chiefs defeated New York Apple Core.

D.J. Paxson made 33 saves for the Seahawks Hockey Club in a 2-1 win over the Valley Jr. Warriors to wind up among the league’s three weekly stars for the second time this season.

COLLEGE COMMITMENTS: Several USHL players recently announced college commitments.

Des Moines Buccaneers center Mac Welsher committed to Merrimack College, Tri-City Storm forward Ian Murphy is headed to Princeton University and Lincoln Stars forward Wyatt Schlaht committed to Brown University.

Welsher, 19, from Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, came to Des Moines in an offseason trade with the Green Bay Gamblers.

Murphy is a 19-year-old from Scituate, Massachusetts.

Schlaht, an 18-year-old from Denver, came to Lincoln after three seasons playing for St. Sebastian’s Prep School in Massachusetts.

ONE-TIMERS: The Eastern Hockey League All-Stars played a weekend series with college teams, losing 3-1 to Plymouth State on Friday, then 8-5 to UMass-Boston on Saturday. Friday’s game was a one-goal margin until a late empty-net goal … Sioux Falls Stampede defenseman Ryan Johnson scored his first USHL goal and had two assists, including one on the overtime game-winner, in Friday’s 6-5 win over the Waterloo Black Hawks. Prior to joining the Stampede, Johnson participated in multiple USA Hockey Youth and High School National Championships with the Anaheim Junior Ducks, a USA Hockey Model Association, and Santa Margarita Catholic High School. Johnson’s father, Craig, was a member of the U.S. Men’s National Team and played more than 500 games in the NHL … Kayan Johnson, not related to the aforementioned Johnsons, made 50 saves Sunday, setting up the Skylands Kings for a 2-1 NA3HL shootout victory over the Oswego Stampede … Granite City’s NA3HL winning streak reached seven Saturday when Jake Hessinger had a hat trick, Justin Paschke dished out four assists and Matt Fitzgerald made 18 saves in an 8-0 shutout of the Wisconsin Whalers.
