Brown Bears Show Offensive Firepower in Opening Weekend Sweep

Sutton McDonald and Michael Spethmann scored goals in each game and the Kenai River Brown Bears had plenty of other offensive production while sweeping the host Janesville Jets, 5-2 and 7-3, Friday and Saturday to open the North American Hockey League season.               

Filip Karlsson had two goals in the opening win. McDonald and Spethmann also had assists.               

Andy Walker scored twice Saturday. Markuss Komuls and J.J. Boucher each provided three assists.               

NAHL SWEEPS: The Johnstown Tomahawks, New Jersey Titans, Chippewa Steel and Shreveport Mudbugs also completed two-game NAHL series sweeps Saturday.              

Johnstown defeated the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights 3-2 and 5-1.               

Cameron Hebert scored the late game-winner Friday.               

Carson Briere and Samuel Solensky each had three points Saturday.   

New Jersey ruined the Maryland Black Bears debut, 6-3, then needed overtime to complete the sweep with a 1-0 victory.               

Kyler Head had two goals and an assist in the opener.              

Spencer Stanley had the overtime goal to back the 25-save shutout by Matt Ladd.               

Chippewa made an impressive debut by downing the defending Midwest Division champion Fairbanks IceDogs, 3-1 and 3-2.               

Owen Zdunski made 20 saves.               

Josh Langford had 24 saves and added an assist in Saturday’s win.               

Shreveport played in one of two Thursday games that opened the league schedule.              

After raising the Robertson Cup championship banner, the Mudbugs defeated the Corpus Christi Chill by 4-1 scores both Thursday and Saturday.              

Leo Chaurd made 30 saves in the opening win.               

The Topeka Pilots beat the Odessa Jackalopes, 7-6, in the other Thursday opener.              

Topeka’s Quinn Green finished the three-game weekend series with four goals and an assist.              

SCORELESS START: Brendahn Brawley of the Eastern Hockey League’s Philadelphia Little Flyers opened the season with consecutive shutouts in goal.               

Brawley went more than 155 minutes before giving up his first goal of the season Sunday. He is 3-0 with a 1.00 ERA and .961 save percentage.               

HAT TRICKS: The Binghamton Jr. Senators had a hat trick of players with hat tricks when they routed the Niagara Falls Powerhawks 16-1 Saturday, reaching that total of goals for the second straight North American 3 Hockey League game.               

Zach Bell had four goals while Eric Melso and Mike Padgeon had three each.               

The St. Louis Junior Blues put up 11 goals in consecutive wins, including a Mason Kruger hat trick in Sunday’s 11-0 victory over Evansville.               

Lindros Beard had four goals Saturday when the Great Falls Americans pounded the Yellowstone Quake, 13-1, to improve to 3-0.               

Five teams are off to at least 3-0 starts.              

The Helena Bighorns, Long Beach Sharks and Milwaukee Power are 4-0.              

The Atlanta Capitals joined Great Falls at 3-0.             

STORM BREWING: The Tri-City Storm is 3-0-1 in the United States Hockey League exhibition season with the help of balanced scoring.               

Joseph Molenaar, who has three goals, and Jake Crespi each have five points in three games. Brad Morrissey has two goals and two assists in two games.               

ONE-TIMERS: Chase McLane, an 18-year-old forward from Trenton, Michigan, playing for Tri-City in the USHL, has committed to play at Penn State University … Defenseman Tommy Donnelly had a goal and five assists to help the Philadelphia Revolution sweep two EHL games from Team Maryland … Rian Stewart made a successful EHL debut in goal for the Connecticut RoughRiders, making 35 saves in a 4-1 victory over the New Jersey 87’s.
