Captains named at team meeting one day ahead of Series opening in Calgary

CALGARY – Just one day before the puck drops at the 2018 Series vs. Canada, Cayla Barnes (Eastvale, Calif.) and Dominique Petrie (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) were named captains for the 2018 U.S. Under-22 and Under-18 Women’s Select Teams.

Barnes and Petrie were presented with their new captain’s jerseys today during a team meeting, where Olympic gold medalist and U18 assistant coach Brianna Decker was on hand to share a few remarks about what it means to be a leader.

"Leadership in this program is based off of 'team first,' selflessness, and I've seen a lot from you all even this last week," said Decker.  "It's one of the greatest honors to lead a team that represents the greatest country in the world, so when you have that honor, embrace it."

And both Barnes and Petrie also shared their perspective.

"Being able to lead this team is a huge honor," said Barnes. "I have had the privilege to play with and learn from some incredible leaders, and I hope to bring those skills to this team. This group is so talented and it will be special to pull on the jersey for this three game series against Canada."

"Being named captain is a tremendous honor and I'm extremely grateful," said Petrie. "Having the opportunity to lead a team that represents our country is something that is incredibly special, especially with such an amazing group of girls by my side."

ABOUT CAYLA BARNES

Cayla Barnes (Eastvale, Calif.) is a 2018 Olympic gold medalist and three-time International Ice Hockey Foundation Under-18 Women’s World Championship gold medalist (2015, 2016, 2017). In both the 2016 and 2017 IIHF Under-18 Women’s Worlds, Barnes was named the tournament’s top defenseman by the Directorate. She joined the U.S. Women’s National Team in the fall of 2017 after playing five collegiate games as a Boston College freshman, putting her eligibility on hold for a chance to represent Team USA at the Olympic Winter Games. She made her debut for the 2017-18 U.S. Women’s National Team at the 2017 Four Nations Cup in Wesley Chapel, Fla., where she scored two goals and an assist to help the U.S. claim the tournament championship. Barnes was officially named to the 2018 U.S. Olympic Women’s Ice Hockey Team on Jan. 1, 2018, and though she was the youngest member of the team, she skated in all five games on the road to claiming gold in a thrilling overtime shootout against Canada.

ABOUT DOMINIQUE PETRIE

Dominique Petrie (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) is making her third appearance this season as a member of the U.S. Under-18 Women’s Select Team at the U18 Series vs. Canada after having represented Team USA at the event in both 2016 and 2017.  A three-time USA Hockey Girls Select Under-18 Player Development Camp invitee, Petrie hails from California, where she grew up playing boys hockey in the Los Angeles area. Petrie has also been a member of the previous two U.S. Under-18 Women’s National Teams, having helped her squad claim back-to-back gold medals at the IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championships in 2017 and 2018. In 2018, she served as the team’s alternate captain and tied for second on the team in points with eight (3-5). Petrie will begin her college hockey career this fall at Harvard University (ECAC).
