The USA Hockey Officiating Program hosted its annual Western Instructor Training Program last week (May 3-6) at the U.S. Olympic Training Center and the Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

These instructor training sessions – which are conducted twice a year – are designed to train local officiating seminar instructors in the art of classroom teaching, running ice sessions and managing seminars. Participants are recommended by local supervisors and are provided instruction and resources necessary for them to become effective local volunteer seminar leaders. “Teach the teacher” sessions such as these have been offered for officials since 1984.

This year, program topics included the role of a teacher, USA Hockey seminar standards, public speaking, classroom set-up, use of AV aids, conducting on-ice sessions and more. Dave LaBuda, USA Hockey’s National Referee-in-Chief, was on hand for the duration of the program and took part in the meetings over the course of the week.

The four-day program featured 37 participants from 19 states, all of whom are now able to assist in conducting the more than 450 officiating seminars that will be held in their local area each season.
