“There’s a lot of on-ice stuff with coaches before practice and after practice,” Peters said. “I’m watching film a lot and having a lot of talks with the boys about what they see and what they want to do and how they think it can be done better.”               

Peters has earned extra credit for all his studying.              

When he scored 10 points in three straight wins Feb. 16-18, Peters became the Eastern Hockey League’s all-time leader in career scoring.               

“It’s playmaking and getting a lot of help from my teammates,” the 20-year-old from Fairport, New York, near Rochester, said while trying to explain his point totals.               

Peters ranks third in the EHL with 80 points and is second in assists with 55 in 46 games. He has matched his combined point total from two previous seasons in the league — 2015-16 with the New Hampshire Junior Monarchs and New England Wolves, then last season with Walpole.               

“He’s very consistent with his day-to-days, the way he practices, the way he competes,” said Jon Lounsbury, Walpole head coach and general manager.               

Peters had two goals and three assists against the Wolves in an 8-1 win Feb. 16. He came back the next night with a goal and two assists in a 5-4 win over New York Applecore, then had a goal and an assist in a 7-2 win over the New York Bobcats Royals.               

The three straight wins kept the second-place Express in contention for the EHL Boston Division title with a 33-10-3 record.               

Lounsbury appreciates the attention to detail that went into that production from Peters.              

“Chris is very cerebral,” the coach said. “He’s one step ahead of everybody on the ice, which makes him an elite playmaker.               

“He knows where people are going to be and what’s going to happen before it even happens.”               

Peters and the Walpole program had mutual interest in each other after he completed his first season in the EHL. They worked out the details that summer and Peters has thrived while spending the last two seasons with the team.               

“He’s a fun guy to watch play,” Lounsbury said. “He makes good decisions with the puck. He competes really hard. He has a really good stick and his thought process is very elite.”              

Lounsbury likes to mix up his lines, but he has generally kept Peters and William Lebel, who is a distant second on the team in scoring, on opposite wings on the same line.              

They have helped Walpole prepare for a stretch run, which will represent the conclusion of the junior portion of Peters’ hockey career.               

Peters committed to play college hockey at UMass-Boston, beginning in the fall. He said that, during the recruiting process, he liked Boston and appreciated the interest in him from the school’s hockey coaches. Peters plans to study accounting and finance.
