Lancers Sweep Their Way to 30 Wins

The Omaha Lancers became the first United States Hockey League team to reach 30 wins this season by sweeping the Youngstown Phantoms.               

Omaha rolled to an 8-1 win Thursday, jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the first period and getting goals from eight different players.               

The Lancers completed the sweep with Saturday’s 4-1 victory, their ninth in 10 games.               

John Larkin scored first for Youngstown, 4:11 into the game.              

Finland native Jesper Peltonen tied the game in the first period and Jack Randl put the Lancers ahead in the second.             

Czech-born Filip Suchy scored his team-high 27th goal 37 seconds into the third and Noah Cates added a power-play goal.               

Minnesota native and Bemidji State prospect Zach Driscoll made 18 saves in the win.               

USHL ROUNDUP: Chayse Primeau’s hat trick Saturday accounted for all the scoring when the Dubuque Fighting Saints handed the Sioux Falls Stampede their first regulation loss in 10 games, 3-2.               

The USA Hockey National Team Development Program’s Under-18 and Under-17 squads each won their first games back in the league after winning international tournaments. Both teams beat the Central Illinois Flying Aces, with the U18s picking up a 4-1 victory Friday and the U17s getting two goals from Ryder Rolston in a 7-4 win Saturday.              

Jackson Cates, a University of Minnesota Duluth prospect, had his second hat trick of the season and added an assist for the Waterloo Black Hawks Saturday, but it wasn’t enough in an 8-5 loss to the Lincoln Stars. He had one goal the night before in a 2-1 win over the Des Moines Buccaneers.               

Illinois native and University of Wisconsin prospect Dominic Mersch had two goals and two assists to help Lincoln outscore Waterloo.               

PHOTO FINISH: The Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League regular-season title will come down to the final weekend.             

The defending champion Pikes Peak Miners matched last season’s standings points total of 64 when they closed out the season with a 32-8-0-0 record.               

The Steamboat Wranglers (29-7-0-1) are five points behind going into a season-ending, three-game, weekend series at home against the third-place Colorado Thunderbirds.               

Pikes Peak wrapped up its season with a three-game sweep of the Colorado Rampage.               

Jacob May had a hat trick in Friday’s 5-2 win, then had a pair of goals and three assists in Saturday’s 9-2 win.              

Kole Mudra had three assists Friday, then two goals and two assists Saturday.               

Lar Culver had two goals and an assist Saturday, then had a goal and two assists in Sunday’s 7-1 win.               

NAHL NOTES: Daniel Lebedeff made 25 saves while Jack Vincent and Kip Hoffman provided the goals Friday night when the Janesville Jets edged the Coulee Region Chill, 2-1, to clinch a Robertson Cup playoff spot.            

Jason Grande posted his fifth shutout of the season for the Amarillo Bulls when he made 24 saves Friday in a 4-0 win over the Corpus Christi IceRays.              

Jack Leahy stopped 67 of 70 shots for the Johnstown Tomahawks in a two-game weekend sweep of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights.              

PLAYOFF RACE: Defenseman Ian Wallgren moved the Connecticut Oilers a step closer to the sixth and final South Conference playoff berth with the overtime game-winner in Friday’s 3-2 victory over the New York Bobcats Royals.               

RECORD-SETTER: Michigan native Joey Savel registered six assists in two weekend games for the Philadelphia Little Flyers, giving him an EHL record 62 on the season. The Little Flyers’ captain has 91 points in 47 games this season.               

Donny Flynn had 58 assists for the New Jersey Rockets last season.            

ONE-TIMERS: Eric Otto, a forward with the USHL’s Chicago Steel and former Des Moines Buccaneers captain from Burnsville, Minnesota, has committed to play at American International College … Devin Panzeca of the East Coast Wizards is on a 19-game EHL scoring streak … The Binghamton Junior Senators closed in on clinching the North American 3 Hockey League’s overall regular-season title Sunday when Brad Becker had a hat trick while Ryan Reifler and Geoffrey LaMorre added two goals each in an 11-1 rout of the Roc City Royals.
