In USHL, Fighting Saints’ goalies post weekend shutouts

LeClair’s Hometown Hat Trick Leads Avalanche Over Oilers

The New Hampshire Avalanche and Philadelphia Little Flyers were the only teams to go 2-0 in the Eastern Hockey League’s final showcase of the season Friday and Saturday in West Chester, Pennsylvania.

Calvin LeClair returned home to the Keystone State with the Avalanche and had a hat trick in Friday’s 6-3 win over the Connecticut Oilers.

LeClair — son of longtime NHL winger and two-time United States Olympian John LeClair — had a goal and two assists Saturday when he was one of four Avalanche players with three points in an 8-0 rout of the New York Bobcats.

Michael Paglucca made 24 saves in the shutout.

Alex Henson remained hot in goal for the Philadelphia Little Flyers. He has now landed the EHL’s last two Goalie of the Month and last two Goalie of the Week awards.

Henson made 36 saves in a 4-1 win over the Walpole Express Friday.

Joey Savel, who had two assists on Friday, had a hat trick in Saturday’s 5-3 win over the Total Athletic Seahawks.

The Little Flyers followed up the showcase wins by beating the Philadelphia Junior Flyers, 6-0, Sunday when Henson made 26 saves in the shutout and Savel had three assists.

Justin Meers scored four goals for the Philadelphia Revolution in a 5-3 win over the Boston Junior Rangers Saturday.

BACK-TO-BACK BLANKS: Cole Weaver and James Durham posted shutouts on consecutive nights Friday and Saturday for the United States Hockey League’s Dubuque Fighting Saints.

Weaver, a Niagara commit, got his first USHL shutout when he made 24 saves in a 3-0 win over the Green Bay Gamblers to improve to 8-5-1.

Durham then followed with a 32-save shutout in his USHL debut, a 3-0 victory over the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.

The shutouts left the Fighting Saints alone in second place in the Eastern Conference.

USHL ROUNDUP: Zach Borgiel made his USHL debut the same night as Dunham and stopped 21 shots for the Muskegon Lumberjacks in a 4-1 win over the Waterloo Black Hawks.

Madison did all its scoring in the first period Saturday, with two goals and an assist by Cade Borchardt, in a 3-2 victory over Green Bay that gave the Capitols a seven-game winning streak and eight wins in their last nine games.

Ex-University of Wisconsin goalie Matt Jurusik allowed just one goal in each game during busy outings Friday and Saturday while leading the Sioux City Musketeers to wins over the Fargo Force. He stopped 34 shots in Friday’s game and 53 in Saturday’s game, leading the Musketeers to 2-1 and 3-1 victories.

PLAYOFF BOUND: Tyson Gudaitis scored twice Sunday when the New England Stars extended their North American 3 Hockey League winning streak to seven games and clinched a Fraser Cup playoff berth with a 4-2 win over the Cape Cod Islanders.

The Stars join the North Iowa Bulls, Metro Jets, Yellowstone Quake, Texas Brahmas, Binghamton Junior Senators, La Crosse Freeze, L/A Nordiques and Northeast Generals as NA3HL teams that have clinched playoff spots.

ONE-TIMERS: Oliver Wahlstrom, Ty Emberson and Jack Hughes all scored in the last 7:01 Saturday to rally USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program Under-18 Team from a two-goal deficit to a 4-3 victory over the Chicago Steel … The Fairbanks Ice Dogs ran their North American Hockey League winning streak to 13 games with three wins … The Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League-leading Steamboat Wranglers defeated the fifth-place Colorado Thunderbirds, 7-3, behind a Shawn Catudal hat trick, but lost the rematch the next night, 4-1, when Joshua Sample made 44 saves for the Thunderbirds.
