Jack Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) scored the game-winning goal with :51 remaining in the third period for the U.S. National Under-18 Team in its 4-3 victory against the Chicago Steel on Saturday evening at Fox Valley Ice Arena.
With the win, the combined Team USA currently sits in first place in the USHL’s Eastern Conference with 39 points and a record of 19-9-0-1 (W-L-OTL-SOL). The U18s are 19-12-0-3 (W-L-OTL-SOL) overall on the season and 11-2-0-0 in USHL regular season play this year.
Chicago’s Matteo Pietroniro tallied the first goal of the game 7:44 into the first period giving Chicago a 1-0 lead.
With time running out in the opening frame, Jack DeBoer (Madison, N.J.) tied the score at 1-1 at the 18:36 mark. Cam York (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) assisted on the play.
Chicago took the lead back 5:48 into the second period with a goal from Robert Mastrosimone then followed it with another tally in the third period from Blake McLaughlin to make it a 3-1 game with under 13 minutes left in the game.
With 7:01 remaining in the third period, Oliver Wahlstrom (Quincy, Mass.) scored an unassisted tally to cut the U18s deficit to one.
Ty Emberson (Eau Claire, Wis.) scored an unassisted power play tally with 4:30 remaining in the period to yet again make it a tied game.
The U18s took the lead with :51 left in regular play thanks to an unassisted goal by Hughes to give the U18s a win 4-3 over Chicago Steel.
Wahlstrom, Patrick Giles (Chevy Chase, Md.), and Bode Wilde (Birmingham, Mich.) led the U18s in shots on goal and goalie Jonathan Mor (Highland Park, Ill.) made 21 saves to lead the team to victory.
The U18s return to action next weekend when they travel to Minnesota for a matchup with NCAA Division-III opponent, Saint John’s University in Saint Cloud, next Friday at 8 p.m. ET.
