Metro Jets Sweep Blues in Battle of NA3HL Division Leaders
Michigan native Jhuwon Davis scored in both games when the Metro Jets went to St. Louis and swept the Junior Blues by scores of 5-2 and 5-1 in a weekend series between North American 3 Hockey League division leaders.
Andrew Kormos made 24 saves in Saturday’s 5-2 win.
Anthony Cinato scored twice and Brian Tallieu made 27 saves the next day.
Metro leads the East with a 27-4-1 record.
The Blues lead the Midwest at 26-4-0-0.
NAHL ROUNDUP: Minnesota native Alex Schilling paved the way for a comeback and made sure another opponent never got started while contributing to two North American Hockey League wins for the Austin Bruins by not allowing a goal.
Schilling, an Air Force commit, came off the bench with the Bruins trailing 4-0 on Wednesday and made 18 saves to allow the Bruins to rally for a 5-4 overtime victory over the Brookings Blizzard. He then posted a 33-save shutout in Saturday’s 2-0 win again over the Blizzard.
Missouri native Luke Radetic completed a hat trick with an overtime game-winner Saturday to lift the Kenai River Brown Bears over the Coulee Region Chill 5-4. After also scoring in Friday’s 3-2 win over the Chill, Radetic is fourth in the league with 20 goals.
Cam Cook scored three goals in two games while taking over the team scoring lead and helping the Shreveport Mudbugs improve the league’s best record to 26-5-5. Cook has goals in three straight games.
FOURTH AWARD: Illinois native Dryden McKay from the Madison Capitols earned his fourth career United States Hockey League Goaltender of the Week award after extending his personal winning streak to four games with two strong performances.
McKay made 55 saves Friday in a 4-1 win over the Waterloo Black Hawks when he carried a shutout into the final four minutes.
The next night, McKay made 31 saves against the Chicago Steel, the league’s third highest-scoring team, which he also held scoreless through the first two periods.
McKay, a Minnesota State commit, was honored twice in three weeks last January and also received the award late in October of this season.
Madison is 7-2-0-1 in its last 10 games.
EASTERN HOCKEY LEAGUE SHOWDOWNS: Calvin LeClair led the New England Division-leading New Hampshire Avalanche to a pair of wins over the top two teams in the Boston Division.
LeClair had two goals and assisted on the other three in Friday’s 5-4 win over the Walpole Express. He had two more assists in a 5-1 win over the first-place Boston Junior Rangers.
The teams are the top three in the Northern Conference.
COLLEGE COMMITMENTS: Goalie Cole Weaver from the USHL’s Dubuque Fighting Saints has committed to Niagara University.
The 20-year-old from Champlin, Minnesota, is tied for fifth in the league with a 2.13 goals-against average.
Donovan Ott, a forward with the Johnstown Tomahawks of the NAHL, has committed to play at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), beginning immediately.
Ott, from Lebanon, Pennsylvania, had seven goals and eight assists in 17 games in this, his second season with Johnstown.
ONE-TIMERS: Blake McLaughlin, a University of Minnesota commit from Grand Rapids, Minnesota, posted a hat trick and two assists for Chicago on Sunday in a 7-2 USHL victory over the Sioux City Musketeers. McLaughlin’s 32 points (14G, 18A) through 25 games rank third overall in the USHL. Last summer, McLaughlin skated with the U.S. Under-18 Men’s Select Team at the Ivan Hlinka Cup where he finished as the team’s third-leading scorer … The EHL has 16 weekend games scheduled at the Ice Line in West Chester, Pennsylvania, in its final showcase of the season … Iowa native Alex Henson of the Philadelphia Little Flyers added to his last two EHL Goaltender of the Month honors with a Goaltender of the Week Award by improving to 10-1 with three shutouts and a 1.82 GAA since joining the team in October … The Binghamton Junior Senators became the third NA3HL team to clinch a playoff berth when they routed the Roc City Royals, 14-0, behind four goals by Michael Padgeon and 19 saves by the aptly named Jeffrey Zero.
