Goalie symposium in Alabama foretells a bright future

By USA Hockey, 12/05/17, 11:00AM MST

Pelham Civic Center in Alabama hosted the first-ever USA Hockey Southern Affiliate Goaltending Development Symposium this past weekend.

In all, 18 goalies participated, including a mix of boys and girls ranging from 9 to 15 years old, along with their parents and coaches. USA Hockey ADM managers Phil Osaer and Scott Paluch helped lead the symposium, along with Erik Hudson, Southern Affiliate goaltending development coordinator (GDC), Brad Parker, Midwest GDC, and Tommy Jones, Idaho GDC.

In addition to on-ice training, the participating goalies also worked on their overall athleticism during off-ice sessions. Special classroom discussions added to the well-rounded educational experience, detailing the four stages of goalie development (foundation, skills, game recognition, performance) as well as covering many subtleties of the position for athletes, coaches and parents.

“I was impressed with the goaltenders’ engagement, work ethic, and their overall goaltending ability,” said Osaer. “It was a lot of fun to be in one of our emerging hockey markets and see that the future is bright for hockey and goaltending in the south.”
