McKay Wins Another Goaltender of the Week Award
Dryden McKay is making a habit of earning United States Hockey League Goaltender of the Week awards.
McKay, who picked up the award twice in three weeks in January 2017, earned it again for the week that ended Sunday when he stopped 49 of the 50 shots to lead the Madison Capitols to a 5-1 victory over the Waterloo Black Hawks.
The 19-year-old from Downers Grove, Illinois has been busy. He is 3-3 while ranking fifth in the league in total saves despite only ranking 10th in minutes played.
USHL ROUNDUP: Griffin Loughran of the Fargo Force racked up six points Saturday when he scored a hat trick and assisted on the other three goals in a 6-5 victory over the Des Moines Buccaneers.
The Northern Michigan recruit from New York used seven points in two games to join the five-way tie for the league scoring lead with 10 points.
Jack Dugan from the Chicago Steel and Loughran’s teammate Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup each have eight goals among their 10 points.
Jack Hughes of the USA Hockey National Team Development Program has 10 points in four games.
Chicago joins Fargo with two of the players. Blake McLaughlin matches Dugan’s 10 points.
Defenseman Brendan Bushy scored goals in consecutive games to help the Dubuque Fighting Saints to a two-game sweep of the Central Illinois Flying Aces.
Chicago and the Tri-City Storm are on top of each conference at 6-1. Fargo is 5-2-1 to match Tri-City in points in the Western Conference, but has played two more games.
EASTERN ROUNDUP: Anthony Starzi and Jake Fuss have formed a hot combination for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights, who are trying to work their way up to the .500 mark in the Eastern Hockey League.
Starzi had seven goals and five assists in four games, capping the week with an overtime game-winner Sunday against the Philadelphia Junior Flyers.
Lineman Jake Fuss had five goals and three assists in the same stretch to push his team-leading point total to 26 through 17 games.
Chris Peters of the Walpole Express has a league-high 22 assists after scoring his 100th career EHL point by getting nine in three games last week.
The Philadelphia Revolution won four more times to reach 17-0.
Jarrett Slear had five goals and five assists to help the New Hampshire Avalanche win three straight games and improve to 14-2-1.
BOLTS BREAKTHROUGH: The expansion Breckenridge Bolts are third in the Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League after rallying for two wins in a three-game road series against the Colorado Rampage.
The Bolts are just five points behind the league-leading Steamboat Wranglers with four games in hand.
Douglas Wakelyn stopped 30 of 31 shots in a wild first period Friday to keep the Bolts within range. They eventually rallied from three goals down to win 4-3 behind Wakelyn’s 57 saves.
It was a series of comebacks.
The Rampage gave up the first two goals but won 4-2 on Saturday.
Breckenridge fell behind 2-0 after one period Sunday, but Luke Gosnell scored twice in the second to lead a 5-2 win.
ONE-TIMERS: Dubuque defenseman Jordan Wishman, an 18-year-old from Des Moines who is the first Iowan to play full-time for the Fighting Saints since the 2010-11 season, has announced his commitment to Michigan State University. … Hunter Johnson had two goals Sunday when the Jersey Shore Wildcats defeated the Roc City Royals, 7-4, for their fourth straight victory to take over the North American 3 Hockey League Northeast Division lead by improving to 11-4. ... North American Hockey League scoring leader Colin Bilek, an Army West Point recruit from Michigan, had two goals and two assists as the Northeast Generals won twice.
