Junior Notebook: Flying Aces and Gamblers Start 2-0 in USHL

Flying Aces and Gamblers Start 2-0 in USHL Opening Weekend

The Central Illinois Flying Aces overcame slow starts in each game to get their United States Hockey League season off to a fast start.               

All 17 USHL teams opened their campaigns last weekend and 11 played twice, but only the Flying Aces and Green Bay Gamblers began 2-0.

Central Illinois swept the Youngstown Phantoms, 4-2 and 5-1, Saturday and Sunday after giving up the first goal both nights.               

Tyler Madden assisted on the goal that put the Flying Aces ahead, and then the scored the game-winner Saturday.               

Matt Gosiewski had two goals and two assists while Max Andrews added a goal and two assists to back Kris Carlson’s 24-save effort Sunday.             

Green Bay won twice at home, both by 2-1 scores.               

The Gamblers defeated the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders Friday, then beat the Dubuque Fighting Saints in overtime Saturday.               

Maksim Zhukov, who was selected in the National Hockey League Entry Draft by the Vegas Golden Knights, stopped 43 of 45 shots for the Gamblers in the two games.           

MORE OPENERS: Michael Gildon had a hat trick in his league debut Saturday night and also added an assist while helping USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program double up the defending Clark Cup champion Chicago Steel 10-5.               

The Lincoln Stars beat the Muskegon Lumberjacks 1-0 Friday, the opening night for the league.               

The Sioux City Musketeers, the Tri-City Storm and the Waterloo Black Hawks joined Lincoln and the NTDP at 1-0.               

PERFECT START: The Philadelphia Revolution won three games, including their third and fourth shutouts of the season while improving to 11-0 in the Eastern Hockey League.               

Robert LaBrosse scored midway through the third period for the only goal of the 1-0 Oct. 4 victory over the Philadelphia Junior Flyers. Travis Pelke needed only 12 saves for his shutout.              

Bryce Witman had three goals and an assist while Kyle Bradley had two goals and an assist in Sunday’s 10-0 rout of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights. Logan Kramley made 28 saves.               

NAHL ROUNDUP: The East Division rival Northeast Generals and Philadelphia Rebels continue to lead the North American Hockey League in standings points and winning percentage.               

The Generals improved to 10-2-0, making them the first team to reach 20 points in the standings.               

The Rebels have the only perfect record at 8-0-0.               

Anthony Quatieri had three goals and three assists in Northeast’s three-game home sweep of the Johnstown Tomahawks, giving him 13 points through 12 games. He had two goals and an assist in Saturday’s 4-0 win.               

Defenseman Diarmad Dimurro helped Philadelphia go 3-0 on the weekend. He had the game-winning goal in Friday’s 2-1 win over Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, then assisted on Auggie Moore’s overtime goal when the Rebels beat the Knights again 5-4.        

Defenseman Matt Denman had the game-tying goal and the shootout winner for the Minnesota Magicians in Friday’s 4-3 win over the Coulee Region Chill.               

Chad Veltri made 49 saves for the Corpus Christi Ice Rays in Sunday’s 2-1 overtime win over the Amarillo Bulls.               

ONE-TIMERS: Corpus Christi, the Topeka RoadRunners, Brookings Blizzard, Janesville Jets, Minnesota Magicians and Shreveport Mudbugs all joined Northeast and Philadelphia in posting weekend NAHL sweeps. … Mark Capkovic scored two goals, including the overtime game-winner, to help the St. Louis Junior Blues hand the North Iowa Bulls their first North American 3 Hockey League loss. … The Granite City Lumberjacks have the only perfect NA3HL record at 7-0-0.
