Nothing is more critical to the long-term development of American players than quality coaching. That’s why USA Hockey strives to be a world-leading provider of coaching education resources, providing the highest level of education for coaches so they can provide the best learning environment possible for players.

A central piece of USA Hockey’s vast coaching education resource library is the age-specific online training platform, which includes modules loaded with actionable insights to help coaches develop players’ full athletic potential and ensure a fun, safe learning experience. These modules are age-specific for 8U, 10U, 12U, 14U, 16/18/19U and disabled hockey. They not only set the standard for online hockey coaching education, they also provide a solid foundation from which coaches can build a successful, fulfilling youth hockey season.

USA Hockey’s age-specific modules have been widely emulated by other youth sports and have proven to be an important tool for coaches to hone their craft and deepen their understanding of age-specific best practices.

Modules to be Completed Prior to Season

Starting with the 2017-18 season, coaches will have to complete the age-specific coaching education module pertinent to the age group they are coaching prior to participating in any team activities. In previous seasons, coaches had until Dec. 31 to complete the age specific module(s).

“We are extremely fortunate to have a world-class coaching education program,” said Mark Tabrum, director of USA Hockey’s coaching education program, “and parents can feel confident that those coaching their children are as well prepared to take the ice as they are in any sport.”

The information found in the modules is beneficial to coaches of all backgrounds and a perfect way to begin preparation for a great season to come.

Module completion does not expire, so coaches only need to complete the age-specific module once. It does not need to be completed annually. However, if a coach moves up or down to a different age classification, he or she will need to complete that specific age classification’s module.
