USA Hockey, Florida Panthers collaborate for coaches

USA Hockey’s Southeastern District was the epicenter of North America’s puck passions on Saturday with Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final underway in Tennessee. But that wasn’t the only hockey happening to enjoy a heaping dose of southern hospitality. Further to the south, at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida, USA Hockey hosted coaching clinics for Levels 1-4 in cooperation with the Florida Panthers.

In all, some 82 coaches from the Southeastern District participated in the two-day event, which included the usual wealth of coaching education resources along with special presentations from Florida Panthers goaltending coach Rob Tallas and video coach Tommy Cruz.

USA Hockey’s Ty Newberry, Southeastern District coach in chief, led the proceedings.

“The Southeastern District has a great relationship with all five of its NHL teams – the Capitals, Hurricanes, Lighting, Panthers and Predators – and it’s terrific working together to raise the level of coaching in this region,” said Newberry. “Teaming up with the Panthers this past weekend is a great example of how we have been working together to improve our youth coaches for the past number of years. Together, we make a direct impact on improving young players, keeping them in the game longer and providing a fun and safe environment for development.”

This past weekend’s clinic offered Level 1-3 certification opportunities and a Level 4 continuation option, making it one of approximately 30 Level 4 clinics hosted by USA Hockey each season. USA Hockey conducts more than 700 Level 1-3 clinics each season, which give coaches throughout the country, even those in remote regions, ample opportunity to learn, develop their skills and share ideas with peers. As a capstone of its Coaching Education Program, USA Hockey also hosts a biennial Level 5 coaching clinic known as the National Hockey Coaches Symposium. This event occurred most recently in August 2016, with the next edition scheduled for the summer of 2018.
