Associations and rinks can register now to host in November, March

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — USA Hockey announced today the opening of host-site registration for its 2017-18 Try Hockey For Free Days.

The season’s first nationwide Try Hockey For Free Day will be Saturday, Nov. 4, 2017, as part of Come Play Hockey Month. The second opportunity will occur Saturday, March 3, 2018, the weekend following the XXIII Olympic Winter Games closing ceremony. Local youth hockey associations and rinks can register to host on either of those dates. USA Hockey provides official host sites with on- and off-ice training, jerseys and promotional resources.

Register to Host

USA Hockey's Try Hockey For Free program, with support from the National Hockey League and NHL member clubs, among others, is designed to provide youth hockey associations nationwide with a platform to introduce children to the sport. More than 143,000 children have participated in USA Hockey’s national Try Hockey For Free Days since the program’s inception in February 2010. Pure Hockey and Liberty Mutual Insurance are official sponsors of Try Hockey For Free Days.

2 and 2 Challenge

For associations and rinks interested in additional participation growth opportunities, USA Hockey also offers its 2 and 2 Challenge. The program provides youth hockey associations with step-by-step guidance, tools and national resources to boost participation among children between the ages of 4 and 8. The goal of the 2 and 2 Challenge is for participating organizations to add two new players and retain two players more than the previous season’s total. To achieve this goal, USA Hockey organizes a season-long plan and resources that help associations acquire and retain more players.

During its recently concluded fifth season, USA Hockey’s 2 and 2 Challenge helped 321 associations in 43 states progress toward hitting their participation growth goals.

“Growth initiatives are a vital component of our program and the 2 and 2 Challenge provides the necessary support and incentives to continually improve our player recruitment efforts,” said Brian Thul, 8U program director with Armstrong Cooper Youth Hockey in New Hope, Minnesota. “Our families are excited to be a part of the initiatives and that correlates to higher registration numbers.”
