Week-long event celebrates all levels of the game

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Hockey today announced the winners of the 2009 Hockey Weekend Across America Best Programming Contest. Hyland Hills Hockey Association (Westminster, Colo.) won the Grand Prize, which includes 25 sets of OneGoal starter hockey equipment and $2,000.

The second annual Hockey Weekend Across America, presented by Reebok, took place Feb. 13-15, 2009, across the United States. The event, led by USA Hockey, provides a platform to celebrate the game nationwide and also expose the sport to new audiences.

Members of the Hyland Hills Hockey Association created unique ways to celebrate hockey and provided opportunities for those who haven't played the sport to get involved. To start the weekend's festivities, the association organized floor hockey games and question-and-answer sessions at local schools. On Saturday, Feb. 14, the association hosted two OneGoal sessions, providing individuals a free opportunity to experience hockey, including a skate with current collegiate players from around the region. To thank their local hockey heroes on the final day of the celebration, members of the association hosted a hockey scrimmage featuring the police vs. fire departments.

Additionally, five runner-up prizes of $1,000 each have been awarded to: Center State Youth Hockey (Morrisville, N.Y.), Fairbanks (Alaska) Hockey Hall of Fame, Hershey (Pa.) Jr. Bears Girls, Redding (Calif.) Hockey and Siouxland Youth Hockey Association (Sioux City, Iowa).
