Team USA Looks to Defend Title and Win Gold Again

USA vs. Canada

 After three preliminary round wins, the 2016 U.S. Women’s National Under-18 Team defeated Sweden, 4-0, in semifinal play last night to earn a spot in tonight's gold-medal game against Canada at 7:30 p.m. ET at Meridian Centre in St. Catharines, Ontario. The match-up will be streamed at NHL.com.

The U.S. defeated Canada, 4-1, in preliminary round play and are now meeting for the second time at this year’s event. Overall, this is the 11th time they have at the IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championship. Team USA holds a 3-3-2-2 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record against Canada. The U.S. has outscored Canada, 28-25, in overall goal scoring.

The U.S. and Canada have gone head-to-head in the gold-medal game every year since the tournament’s inception in 2008, with the U.S. topping Canada last year, 3-2, in an exciting overtime victory to claim the gold medal, becoming the first team to do so on home soil. The teams are knotted, 2-2-2-2 (W-OTW-OTL-L) in gold medal games.
