Intro-to-Goaltending Series Set for January in Connecticut

By USA Hockey, 12/23/15, 5:45PM MST

It’s a common dilemma for youth hockey parents. Children see the cool mask, the colorful gear, and they ask, “Can I play goalie?”

Set for January in Connecticut, an introduction-to-goaltending series will allow boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 16 to sample the position, with instruction provided by goaltending coaches from throughout the northeast, along with Phil Osaer, USA Hockey’s ADM goaltending manager.

“We’re focused on strengthening the American talent pool and these intro-to-goaltending events will be a great step in that process,” said Osaer. “They’ll expand opportunities and training at the base of the pyramid, while events like our Strelow camp and women’s camp focus on goalies in the older age groups.”

The introduction-to-goaltending events will feature age-appropriate training for aspiring young goalies, covering the basics of equipment to more advanced playing techniques in a fun, active format. They’re designed to welcome kids to the role and inspire a passion for puck-stopping.

Registration will be completed on-site prior to the events, so attendees should arrive early. Goaltending equipment will be available for use on a first-come, first-served basis. The preliminary schedule is as follows:

Date Arena Location Time (ET)
Friday, Jan. 8, 2016 Newington Arena Newington, Connecticut 6:40-7:40 p.m.
Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016 Jennings-Fairchild Rink - Avon Old Farms Avon, Connecticut 8-9 a.m.
Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016 Darien Ice Rink Darien, Connecticut 11:40 a.m.-12:40 p.m.
