CALGARY, Alta. - Five players scored goals and 10 different U.S. skaters had at least one point to help the U.S. Women's National Team defeat Canada, 5-1, here tonight.

Brianna Decker (Dousman, Wis.) and Kelli Stack (Brooklyn Heights, Ohio) contributed two points each to lead all U.S. skaters in that category and Jessie Vetter (Cottage Grove, Wis.) stopped 15 of the 16 shots she faced.

"Tonight was a good test and all the hard work we've been putting in really paid off," said Katey Stone, head coach of the 2014 U.S. Olympic Women's Ice Hockey Team. "We minimized mistakes in our own zone, scored on the power play and are continuing to get better."

Alex Carpenter (North Reading, Mass.) opened the scoring for the U.S. at 11:59 of the first period with a five-on-three power play goal. Following a stretch of sustained pressure, Gigi Marvin (Warroad, Minn.) skated out from behind the net and passed it to Carpenter who fired it past Canadian goaltender Shannon Szabados. The score remained 1-0 at the end of the first period.

The U.S. outshot Canada, 12-5, during the second period and Decker tallied the lone goal of the frame at 2:42 to give the U.S. a 2-0 lead.

Team USA maintained the momentum in the third period and was able to score three more goals despite several quality saves by Szabados. Meghan Duggan (Danvers, Mass.) made it 3-0 when she redirected a shot from the point into the net at 4:30 while on the power play. At 9:37, Canada took advantage of a turnover and Tara Watchorn beat Vetter from just inside the circle to close the gap to 3-1. Hilary Knight (Sun Valley, Idaho) answered back just 40 seconds later off a feed from Stack, to extend the lead to 4-1. While shorthanded, Megan Bozek (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) added an empty net goal at 19:58 to make it a 5-1 final score.

The U.S. Women's National Team will be back in action on Dec. 20 when it plays Canada in Grand Forks, N.D.
