LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- The U.S. Women's National Under-18 Team was defeated by Canada, 3-2, here today in the second of three games between the two teams at the 2013 Women's Under-18 Series.

"Canada came out strong and didn't give us much room to operate but you could see our confidence level improve in the third period after we scored," said head coach Jeff Kampersal. "We'll continue to work hard and try to carry that momentum forward into the final game of the series."

Canada jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period with a shorthanded goal at 3:43 and a power-play goal at 9:44.

After a scoreless second period, the visitors extended their lead to 3-0 with a power-play goal at 7:54 of the final frame. Just 2:20 later, Maliya Rodgers (Minnetonka, Minn.) closed the gap to 3-1 after collecting a rebound and chipping it over the shoulder of Canadian netminder Kassidy Sauve. With the U.S. goaltender pulled for an extra attacker, Lexie Laing (Marblehead, Mass.) took a pass out of the corner from Caitrin Lonergan (Roslindale, Mass.) and slid it through Sauve's pads to make it 3-2. The U.S. pressured the Canadian goalie in the closing minutes but were unable to convert and send it to overtime.

The series concludes on Sunday (Aug. 25) at 10:00 a.m. EDT at the Olympic Center's 1980 Herb Brooks Arena. The game will be carried live by FASTHockey at usahockey.fasthockey.com.
