U.S. Blue, White Rosters Set For 2019 WJSS

Koumontzis, McCarthy added to U.S. roster; Event begins July 26 at USA Hockey Arena

USA Hockey announced today the Team Blue and Team White rosters for the 2019 World Junior Summer Showcase that will take place at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan, from July 26-Aug. 3. 

Team Blue will be coached by Brett Larson (Duluth, Minn./St. Cloud State University) and Derek Plante (Cloquet, Minn.), while Team White will be coached by Steve Miller (Sun Prairie, Wis./Ohio State University) and Ben Simon (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Grand Rapids Griffins).

The week-long event will include 11 international competitions between Canada, Finland, Sweden and the United States. The event features the best Under-20 players from four nations – the U.S., Canada, Finland and Sweden – auditioning for a spot to represent their country in the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship. KOUMONTZIS, MCCARTHY JOIN U.S. ROSTER

USA Hockey also announced today that forward Demetrios Koumontzis (Scottsdale, Ariz./Arizona State University) and defenseman Case McCarthy (Clarence, N.Y./U.S. National Under-18 Team) have been added to the U.S. roster at the 2019 World Junior Summer Showcase.

Both players are fourth-round NHL Draft picks, with Koumontzis a 2018 selection by the Calgary Flames (108th overall) while McCarthy heard his name called by the New Jersey Devils (118th overall) at the 2019 NHL Draft. Koumontzis and McCarthy will both skate in the college hockey ranks this coming season, as Koumontzis enters his sophomore campaign at Arizona State University while McCarthy will embark on his freshman season as Boston University. The two players will skate on Team White in place of Robert Mastrosimone (East Islip, N.Y./Chicago Steel) and Jayden Struble (Cumberland, R.I./St. Sebastian's School), who are unable to attend camp due to injury.

ABOUT THE U.S. ROSTER

The 44-player U.S. roster now encompasses 16 states, including Alaska, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Ohio Rhode Island, Virginia and Wisconsin. More than half of the U.S. invitees have represented the U.S. internationally across six major events, including the IIHF World Junior Championship(2019-silver), IIHF Under-18 Men's World Championship (2019-bronze, 2018-silver), Youth Olympic Winter Games (2016-gold), World Junior A Challenge (2018-first, 2017-second), Hlinka Gretzky Cup (2018, 2017) and Under-17 Five Nations Cup (2017-first, 2016-first). The U.S. roster includes 37 players with ties to 18 college programs, 20 players who skated this past season in the United States Hockey League, and 41 NHL Draft picks, half of which were drafted in the first or second round.

In addition, 23 players on the U.S. roster have skated at least one full season with USA Hockey's National Team Development Program, which is based out of USA Hockey Arena. Among the NTDP alumni are 11 first-round selections, including 2019 first-round picks John Beecher (Boston Bruins, 30th overall), Matthew Boldy (Minnesota Wild, 12th overall), Cole Caufield (Montreal Canadiens, 15th overall), Ryan Johnson (Buffalo Sabres, 31st overall), Spencer Knight (Florida Panthers, 13th overall), Alex Turcotte (Los Angeles Kings, 5th overall), Cam York (Philadelphia Flyers, 14th overall) and Trevor Zegras (Anaheim Ducks, 9th overall), as well as 2018 NHL Draft first-rounders Joel Farabee (Philadelphia Flyers, 14th overall), K'Andre Miller (New York Rangers, 22nd overall) and Oliver Wahlstrom (New York Islanders, 11th overall).
