Jerry York Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame

York has won five NCAA national championships as a head coach

Six individuals were inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Tuesday, including American Jerry York (Watertown, Mass.), the winningest coach in college hockey history.

“The Hockey Hall of Fame is proud to welcome these hockey legends as Honoured Members,” said Lanny McDonald, Chairman of the Hockey Hall of Fame.  “Their contributions to the game of hockey are well documented and their election to the Hockey Hall of Fame is richly deserved.”


York has captured four NCAA titles and appeared in 12 Frozen Fours during his time at Boston College.

The fifth NCAA coach to be inducted, York has won five NCAA national championships during his time as a head coach at Boston College, Bowling Green State University and Clarkson University. York joins fellow Americans Herb Brooks, Bob Johnson, Lou Lamoriello and John Mariucci as the only NCAA coaches in the Hockey Hall of Fame. 

“I’m flabbergasted with this unexpected honor,” said York.  “I will cherish this special recognition.”

York enters the Hockey Hall of Fame in the Builder Category, along with Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford. 

During his time as a head coach at Boston College, York has led the Eagles to four NCAA national championships, along with 12 appearances in the Frozen Four and nine Hockey East tournament titles. A four-time Hockey East Coach of the Year, York is the all-time leader with 41 victories in the NCAA tournament. 

Four individuals were inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in the player category, including Guy Carbonneau, Vaclav Nedomansky, Hayley Wickenheiser and Sergei Zubov. 

NOTES: With the induction, York became the 46th American to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. He joins referee Bill Chadwick; builders Charles Adams, Weston Adams, Gary Bettman, Herb Brooks, George Brown, Walter Brown, Walter Bush, Leo Dandurand, Mike Illitch, Jeremy Jacobs, William Jennings, Bob Johnson, Peter Karmanos, John Kilpatrick, Seymour Knox, Lou Lamoriello, Thomas Lockhart, John Mariucci, Frederic McLaughlin, Bruce Norris, James Norris, Craig Patrick, Ed Snider, William Tutt, Carl Voss, Arthur Wirtz, William Wirtz, John Ziegler, Jr.; and players Hobey Baker, Frank Brimsek, Billy Burch, Chris Chelios, Moose Goheen, Cammi Granato, Si Griffis, Phil Housley, Mark Howe, Brett Hull, Pat LaFontaine, Rod Langway, Brian Leetch, Mike Modano, Joseph Mullen, Angela Ruggiero.
