The Rochester Sled Hockey Organization in Rochester, New York, is one of five Sled Hockey Development Grant winners that will be utilizing the funds to help establish itself in its first year of existence.

Led by individuals who have attended the last three USA Disabled Hockey Festivals, including the 2012 USA Disabled Hockey Workshop, the organization is driven by its mission to provide inclusive, athletic opportunities for youth and adults, with and without physical disabilities, and to maximize their potential to excel in society as a result of their experiences from participating in sled hockey.

With support and resources from the New York State Amateur Hockey Association, last February the organization hosted a “Try Hockey for Free” clinic where nearly 70 people were able to experience sled hockey for the first time. In addition to the clinic, the organization has held several unofficial practice sessions where it has resorted to sharing equipment due to the overwhelming number of participants. With no other sled hockey program or team within 60 miles of Rochester, New York, the desire from the community to establish a sled hockey program is evident.

As a recipient of the Sled Hockey Development Grant, presented by Labatt Blue, the organization will be able to obtain equipment, cover travel expenses, afford more ice time and ultimately become a sled hockey resource in the Rochester area.
