Welcome to USA Hockey’s goaltending development home page! It is a goal of USA Hockey to improve the goaltending position nationwide. This site is set up to help develop goaltenders and educate coaches on the USA style of goaltending. This style has been developed by the Warren Strelow National Goaltending Mentor Program. The Strelow Mentor Program is comprised of the country’s top goaltending coaches. This is not a fancy style. It is simple. Develop a proper foundation (i.e. stance), master the correct fundamentals of the position, apply these fundamentals in game situations, and establish a personal identity, at the proper age, through this foundation. This formula, along with off-ice training to develop as an athlete, will help USA goaltenders develop into well rounded, multidimensional goaltenders. Drills and materials will be provided that will help goaltenders develop in these areas. USA goaltenders and coaches need to take advantage of the information that will be provided on this site and incorporate this information into their practice time. In order for USA goaltenders to reach their full potential three steps must occur. First, coaches must be provided the correct information to train their goaltenders. This information will be provided through this site. Second, coaches need to take the time to train their goaltenders in each practice (team drills and individual time). Third, our goaltenders must work hard in practice and be properly coached, so when game time comes all that is left is to relax and focus on the most important part of the game of hockey: The PUCK! I look forward to seeing USA goaltenders developing to their highest level. Sincerely, Joe Exter US National Team Goaltending Coach |
