2009 - 2010 Coaching Announcement

Joe Cardarelli comes to the Extreme Ice Center after serving one season as an assistant coach at American International College (NCAA Division I, Atlantic Hockey Association) in Springfield, MA.  In addition to on-ice responsibilities, recruiting student-athletes, strength training and video analysis, he also monitored the student-athlete’s academic performance.  With academic success a priority for AIC hockey, a record 20 of 27 players earned all-academic conference honors for the 2007-08 school year.

From 2006-2008 Cardarelli held the position of head boy’s hockey coach at the National Sports Academy, a preparatory school for winter-sport athletes in Lake Placid.  In 2007-08, while playing the program’s most challenging schedule against Division I prep school and Junior A teams from the Atlantic and Eastern Leagues, the Mountaineers averaged four goals per game, the highest in the programs history. In addition, sixteen players moved on to higher levels of competition over the two-year period.

Prior to joining the Mountaineers, Cardarelli served as an assistant coach at Oswego State (NCAA Division III, SUNYAC) for three seasons.  He helped guide the Lakers to two league regular season championships and was responsible for recruiting new student-athletes as well as practice preparation, scouting opponents, reviewing game film and handling the defensive pairings during games.

Cardarelli’s recruiting classes built the foundation from which Oswego State won its first NCAA National Championship in 2007 with two All-Americans, the SUNYAC 2005 and 2006 Rookie of the Year, five All-SUNYAC players, and eight members of the SUNYAC’s All-Academic team.

Before Oswego, Cardarelli lived in the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area, and was active in many capacities developing young hockey players.  He was instrumental in the creation of the Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League, serving as a member of the Operations Committee and coach of the Westfield High School Bulldogs.  In the 2002-2003 season, he helped lead the Washington Junior Capitals of the Metropolitan Junior League to post-season play for the first time in six years.  Cardarelli also coached a pee-wee team to the USA Hockey Tier I national tournament in 2002.

Cardarelli is also active within USA Hockey, coaching at the Select 14, Select 15, Select 16, or Select 17 National Player Development Festivals in each of the past eight summers.  He is also an instructor in the Coaching Education Program and the past-director of the USA Hockey Southeastern District ACE Coordinator program, responsible for developing youth coaches throughout the eleven state region.
