Coaching and Education Recommended Guidelines

                                    AND PROSPECTIVE COACHES

Coaching and Education Recommended Guidelines

  • ALL COACHES (Age 18 and over) MUST REGISTER WITH USA HOCKEY ANNUALLY.  This can be done on-line, print your registration form and/or email it to your team manager and the Registrar.   Upon reaching the age of 18, any student coach must comply with all USA Hockey coaching and screening rules and regulations.

ALL COACHES  (Head coaches and assistants) must have the USA Hockey coaching education card by December 31 of the calendar year and be certified at the right level for the age group they coach.

ALL COACHES must obtain a security clearance every two years as per USAH and Oregon State Hockey Assoc. requirements.  Make sure you do that before your first practice or team meeting!   Team Managers are also required to complete the security screening.

COACHING CLINICS:   Coaching Clinics are offered annually in Oregon, in Medford, Eugene and Portland.  For first time coaches you will need to attend the clinics in order – Level 1, then Level 2, then Level 3 if you plan to coach above the Squirt level (see requirements below).  Check your current expirations before you register.  Some of you will expire in Dec. 2008, and have different options (see below).  To Register Online atwww.usahockey.com click on the Coaches tab.  Once there you will find a menu for the clinics by date.    You can take all three in one weekend, or take Level 1 and 2 this year, and Level 3 next year.  For those of you who want to become Level 4, with no expiration of your qualification (you must be a Level 3 already and in good standing with experience), the Level 4 Clinic is held annually in Reno, Nevada in August for the Pacific District.

CLINICS ARE NOT OFFERED ON-LINE.

To determine which level you need see below.    You pay online by credit card for each session separately.   Some teams have funds set aside to help reimburse their coaches for fees.  This is not universal, and is not a part of Rogue Valley Youth Hockey Association privileges.  It is optional by team.    ONCE YOU HAVE YOUR CERTIFICATION, YOU MUST HAVE YOUR CARD WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES DURING OFFICIAL PRACTICE OR PLAY, EITHER HOME OR AWAY, FOR CREDENTIALS CHECKS.

If you need a new card the information for getting a replacement is also online.    NOTE:  If it has been three years since your Level 3 Certification, you need to renew by attending a Level 3 clinic only, or take the online recertification course for Level 3.

Below are minimum criteria for districts and/or affiliates establishing mandatory coaching education requirement policies.
