| John Crerar, the father of youth hockey in the Southeastern District died Saturday morning October 14th. In the early 60's John, Senator Ted Stevens, Congressman Donald Rumsfield, Secretary of the Army Stanley Resor and others all helped in the formation of Cap Boys, the CBHL and other youth hockey programs. Then being a close friend of AHAUS President Walter Bush, John became the leader of the entire Southeastern District becoming Director Emeritus in 2003. He loved the sport and loved telling stories, dancing at the Bee and Thistle at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs and was enormously proud of the growth of hockey in the South. He was a life long Off-Ice Official with the Washington Capitals having met (Cap's President) Dick Patrick when he ran the semi-pro team in Washington in the late 60's and Dick played for him. John's wife was the president of The Washington Figure Skating Club for many years. The Crerars moved to Aiken, South Carolina and decided to buy the rink there. The rink was a source of fun and frustration but he often said it keeped him out of trouble. John was a very unassuming gentleman and a very dear friend of hockey and all of us involved with the wonderful sport. As you know the district playoffs feature the Crerrar division named in his honor. |
