Stroemel is making his second appearance as head coach of the U.S. Women’s National University Team after working with the inaugural U.S. Women’s National University Team in 2011.
Currently, Stroemel is the assistant coach of the Penn State University women’s hockey team of the ACHA. Prior to being named to his present position, he worked as director of hockey operations for the Penn State women’s team (2011-12) after serving as the program’s head coach from 2007-11.
Additionally, Stroemel was an assistant coach of the Penn State men’s division I team from 2004-07, helping the squad to three straight ACHA national championship games. He also served as head coach of the Penn State men’s division II team from 1996-04, where he earned two ACHA Division II Northeast Region Coach of the Year awards and led the program to four national tournament appearances.
Stroemel resides in State College, Pa., with his wife, Joan, and two children, Sarah and Tom.
Blackburn will be part of the U.S. Women’s National University Team coaching staff for the first time.
He’s currently in his sixth season as head coach of the University of Michigan women’s hockey team. During his time in Michigan, Blackburn has earned a 67-53-10 record while guiding the Wolverines to four ACHA national tournaments (2009, 2011, 2012, 2013).
Prior to joining Michigan, Blackburn coached numerous youth and AAA teams. His resume in the youth coaching ranks includes a Michigan 12U Tier I state championship and a stint as a coach with the Michigan Ice Dogs 19U squad.
Blackburn currently resides in Whitmore Lake, Mich., with his wife, Kathy, and daughters Christina and Ashley.
Wright will serve as an assistant coach with the U.S. Women’s National University Team for the first time.
Currently, Wright is in her fifth season as head coach of the University of Colorado’s women’s hockey team. During her time at Colorado, she has been responsible for growing the program’s involvement with the ACHA, as well as development of community relations between the team and local hockey organizations. Additionally, she served as an assistant coach with Colorado’s women’s hockey team during the 2008-09 campaign.
Wright and her husband, Walter, reside in Broomfield, Colo.
