INSTRUCTOR TRAINING PROGRAM

SEMINAR INSTRUCTOR TRAINING PROGRAM

Each spring, the USA Hockey District Referees-in-Chief send their top prospective Classroom Seminar instructors to the Seminar Instructor Training Program. These programs are coordinated regionally at the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee training centers in Colorado Springs, CO and Lake Placid, NY.

Application to this program is coordinated by the District Referees-in-Chief, and must be completed by the prescribed deadlines. When selected to attend, participants will receive an invitation by March 15th.

Upon arrival at the four-day program, each participant will be presented with a Classroom Seminar Instructor Manual containing all topic guidelines, on-ice drills, and other material necessary to conduct a USA Hockey Officiating Classroom Seminar. Furthermore, the staff will lecture and demonstrate the basic fundamentals of being an educator.

Topics include,

  • Public Speaking
  • Classroom Management
  • Audio & Visual Aids
  • Conducting On-ice Drills

Each participant will create and present two Classroom Seminar topic presentations in a simulated classroom setting which will be video recorded and critiqued by staff and peers in an effort to improve the skills the participants learn during classroom sessions.

The design of the program develops instructors in a similar fashion (observe and deliver immediate positive and constructive feedback) as we develop officials during our various officiating education programs.

By the end of the weekend, each participant will return home with fresh knowledge, an inspired attitude, and a new appreciation towards the hard work and dedication it takes to coordinate and operate local seminars. With further development, these new instructors will bring new energy and ideas into the classroom and help train USA Hockey Officials for the upcoming seasons.

For further information about this program, please contact your District Referee-in-Chief.

NOTE: Due to COVID-19, the United States Olympic & Paralympic Training Centers will remain closed to outside groups until further notice. However, one national program is being coordinated in Minneapolis, MN later this year. Please see below:
