Summer Development Camp

Each summer, the development of young officials continues at the USA Hockey Officiating Development Camps. These camps are used to identify and prepare officials for junior, collegiate, and professional competition. Many of the top officials in the United States have progressed through the various summer development camps, and USA Hockey recruits the top instructors available from professional and collegiate leagues to educate and evaluate the participants in all aspects of officiating. Here is a brief synopsis of each of the camps.

Note: The USA Hockey District Referees-in-Chief have more information regarding each of the development camps. All interested officials that meet the criteria for participation should contact their District RIC. Applications must be submitted of the District RIC by the prescribed deadline.

"USA Hockey has instructors that are second-to-none. The ice sessions were challenging. The classroom sessions were informative. The environment was outstanding and allowed for development. Everything about this camp emphasized becoming a better official. There was no 'fluff' at all. Though it was a mental grind, I can confidently say that after leaving camp, I can go out and conquer the next level with what I've learned and implemented. Not only that, but I can share what I've learned and help others to reach their goals as well." - Michael (Hamburg, N.Y.)

"The other officials here were a blast. We all had a great time pushing each other on and off the ice  and joking around with each other during downtime. I made some great friends here that I hope to see again down the road during my officiating career." - Kyle (Richmond, Va.)

"USA Hockey Officiating Summer Camps offer three years of developmental content in seven days of time. The opportunity to work a game, and get immediate feedback repeatedly is invaluable. The programs also offer campers an unusual amount of development time with top-level instructors." - Dan (Denver, Colo.)

Each men's regional camp (Eastern and Western) has 28 participants from their respective parts of the country. Participating officials range from 18-26 years of age and have a strong desire to develop and achieve assignments at higher levels of hockey. Other criteria for attendance include,

  • Being an excellent skater
  • Having a solid knowledge of all USA Hockey rules and interpretations
  • Having a proficiency at working the three-official system

Additionally, the official must be willing to bring their aquired knowledge home to share with their local grassroots hockey officiating community.

The USA Hockey Officiating Program also conducts a Women's Regional Camp. A total of 12 female applicants between the ages of 18 and 35 will be invited to attend the session. This program is designed to identify and train female officials for future collegiate and international competition. The format and expectation of all participants is identical to the men's regional camp program.

Next in the hierarchy for a developing official is the Men's National Camp. USA Hockey invites 20 applicants from across the country to participate in this program, which offers a higher level of instruction and expectation than previous camps. To be considered an applicant must,

  • Be between 20 and 29 years of age
  • Have previously attended a USA Hockey Regional Camp
  • Display a remarkable improvement in performance since Regional Camp

Once again, these officials are expected to share new information with their local grassroots hockey officiating community once they return home.

The highest program in the summer development camp series is the USA Hockey Officiating Program of Merit. This program invites 14 of USA Hockey's top developing officials from across the country to participate. Instruction staff is built with National Hockey League officials who are committed to giving time to share their experience at the highest level of hockey.

The ulimate mission of this program is to provide tips and tools to the participants, and help them reach their full potential on the ice at all levels of the game (professional, college, etc.).
