RoughRiders Earn Milestone 600th Win for Coach Mark Carlson

Mark Carlson became the second coach in United States Hockey League history to post 600 career wins and the first to do it with one team when his Cedar Rapids RoughRiders defeated the Madison Capitols 4-2 on Sunday night.

Waterloo Black Hawks coach P.K. O’Handley reached 600 USHL wins in 2016.

Michigan Tech commit Blake Pietila made 40 saves in Carlson’s milestone win. Roman Ahcan, a Wisconsin commit, scored the game-winning goal and added an assist.

Carlson has spent 19 years with Cedar Rapids as the only coach in RoughRiders history, winning three Anderson Cup titles as USHL regular-season champion and one Clark Cup playoff title along the way.

RISING UP: The Sioux Falls Stampede defeated the Sioux City Musketeers 5-3 on Friday to improve to 7-0-0-2 in the last nine games and move into a tie for second place in the USHL Western Conference.

The Stampede came from behind three times.

Antti Virtanen tied the game for the last time with 2:59 left in the second period, Carson Dimoff scored the game-winner at 3:42 of the third and Jaxon Nelson added an empty-net goal.

NAHL CLINCHER: The South Division-leading Shreveport Mudbugs became the third team to clinch a North American Hockey League playoff berth when Phoenix native and Arizona State commit Jaxon Castor made 25 saves in a 2-0 win over the Odessa Jackalopes.

Brendan VanSweden and Niagara commit Cameron Cook scored the goals.

The Mudbugs joined the Philadelphia Rebels from the East Division and the Fairbanks Ice Dogs from the Midwest Division as teams that have clinched.

NA3HL NOTES: Brandon Heacock made 39 saves and the Southern Tier Xpress used three third-period goals to break a 17-game North American 3 Hockey League winning streak by the Metro Jets with Friday’s 4-3 victory.

Matt Goodman scored twice Saturday when the Point Mallard Ducks clinched a playoff berth with an 8-1 win over Mid-Cities Jr. Stars.

COLLEGE COMMITMENTS: Three players from the NAHL are among those who recently announced college commitments.

Fairbanks forward Hunter Wendt and Janesville Jets forward Brendan McLaren are both headed to Ferris State University while Shreveport defenseman Dominick Procopio is committed to UMass-Lowell.

Wendt, a 20-year-old from Troy, Michigan, is the fifth-leading scorer on the Ice Dogs with 13 goals and 30 assists in 46 games. His father Tim also played at Ferris State.

McLaren, 19, from Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, has 10 goals and nine assists in 27 games.

Procopio, 20, from Grosse Pointe, Michigan, is second in the NAHL in scoring by a defenseman. He has 34 points in 42 games.

Zach Dubinsky, a forward with the USHL’s Lincoln Stars, announced his commitment to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).

The 17-year-old from Deerfield, Illinois, has 10 points in 36 games with the Stars.

ONE-TIMERS: Mike McPherson had seven points in three weekend wins, giving him 21 points in seven games since rejoining the Boston Junior Rangers of the Eastern Hockey League … Defenseman Connor Boyce had seven points in three games while helping the Connecticut RoughRiders clinch the EHL Central Division title … Eli Billing made 27 saves Monday afternoon when the East Division-leading Philadelphia Rebels shut out the New Jersey Titans, 3-0, for their fourth straight win.
