Awards recognize most innovative sports-related technologies and organizations on international level

The 2018 Sports Technology Awards shortlist was revealed today, with USA Hockey’s Mobile Coach app selected as a finalist in the Best Elite Performance Technology category.

In all, the organizations shortlisted for consideration represent 44 sports and 20 countries.

The Sports Technology Awards recognize the most innovative sports-related technologies and organizations on an international level. Winners in each category will be revealed on May 3, 2018.

USA Hockey Mobile Coach is a portable resource designed specifically for hockey coaches, providing practice plans, drills, videos, safety information and more. The app has been downloaded more than 175,000 times since its initial release in 2012. The 2018 Sports Technology Awards consideration is based on USA Hockey’s recently launched Mobile Coach Version 4.0, with a groundbreaking practice plan analyzer that evaluates a custom-built practice plan and measures it against American Development Model recommendations to ensure that players receive the optimal mix of age-specific skill development.

With the new plan analyzer, Mobile Coach crunches the attributes of every element in the practice and produces a quantified comparison of focus areas such as individual skills, hockey sense, systems and goaltending. The results help coaches evaluate their own plans and easily modify them to optimize the activity mix.

Mobile Coach 4.0 also features a goaltender activity tracker that summarizes performance by zone for improved instruction and goaltender development. Additionally, the app allows coaches to build, design, diagram and distribute their own practice plans populated from USA Hockey’s library of 1,500 drills, small-area games and videos.

“Mobile Coach continues to be a tremendous USA Hockey member benefit and resource for our coaches,” said Mark Tabrum, USA Hockey’s director of coaching education. “It’s a market leader and we’re continually looking at what we can do to make it even more valuable and keep it ahead of the curve. We're certainly pleased to be recognized as a finalist for the Sports Technology Award.”
