Kothenbeutel has 40 points in 31 games after scoring 57 in 58 games last season

North American Hockey League scoring leader Travis Kothenbeutel has added a more historic scoring title to his resume: that of the highest scorer in Austin Bruins team history.

Kothenbeutel had five points in two wins to help the Bruins sweep a series with the Minot Minotauros.

The 20-year-old Nebraska-Omaha commit from Sauk Rapids, Minnesota is tied with Jay Dickman for the most points in Bruins history.

Kothenbeutel had a goal and an assist in Friday’s 4-3 shootout win, then had a goal and two assists in a 5-2 victory.

“Travis has been a spark plug for us all season,” Austin coach Steve Howard said in a story on the league website.

Kothenbeutel has 40 points in 31 games after scoring 57 in 58 games last season. His 27 total assists and 15 power-play assists also lead the NAHL.

NAHL CLIMBERS: The Aberdeen Wings took over the NAHL Central Division lead Saturday on Colton Fletcher’s overtime game-winner in a 6-5 victory over the Minnesota Magicians.

Josh Benson stopped 60 of 64 shots in two wins over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights, allowing the Fairbanks Ice Dogs to complete an 8-0 road trip.

USHL ROUNDUP: The Fargo Force and Tri-City Storm remain 1-2 in the usahockeymagazine.com United States Hockey League Power Rankings to start January.

Fargo has the league’s best record at 16-7-2-3. Goalie Strauss Mann had a 1.83 goals against average and .942 save percentage during the month while William Fallstrom led the team with seven points in eight games.

While the Force has the most points in the standings, Tri-City (17-7-0-1) has the most wins and the best winning percentage.

Chase Gresock had a hat trick, including two goals in the first seven minutes, Saturday to lead the Youngstown Phantoms to a 4-2 win over the host Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.

Zach Driscoll made 35 saves Saturday to lead the Omaha Lancers to a 4-1 win over the Tri-City Storm.

The Madison Capitols have the league’s Defenseman of the Week for the second straight week with Colin Felix following Jared Kucharek. Felix had a goal and four assists in two games as the Capitols won twice, giving them four victories in five games.

Both blueliners are headed to college next year, Felix to UMass and Kucharek to Western Michigan.

PIKES PEAKING: The defending Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League champion Pikes Peak Miners went 3-0 on the weekend to extend their winning streak to nine games and move within two points of the first-place Steamboat Wranglers.

The Miners (18-6-0-0) have a game in hand on the Wranglers (19-6-0-0).

Pikes Peak won two games over the Wranglers to end 2017, then opened 2018 by scoring 27 goals in a three-game sweep of the Colorado Thunderbirds, which they wrapped up with a 9-0 shutout Sunday.

 

Ian Zaleski has 29 goals and 26 assists to lead the league in scoring by 16 points. The Boise, Idaho native had two straight two-goal games to start an 11-point weekend.

 

EASTERN EXPRESS: The Walpole Express ran its winning streak to six games when the Eastern Hockey League returned from its holiday break.

Team scoring leader Chris Peters had six points, including both game-winning goals for Walpole.

Peters has 56 points in 32 games on the season, including 21 while the team has gone 11-1 in its last 12.

Peters and Larry Niland each had four goals and two assists.

EARLY CLINCHERS: The North Iowa Bulls and St. Louis Junior Blues became the first two teams to clinch North American 3 Hockey League playoff berths.

North Iowa is unbeaten in regulation at 27-0-2-2.

The Bulls feature five players between 57 and 47 points: Tyler Bump (22 goals, 35 assists), David Dolter (26-29), Josh Arnold (27-25), Cameron Fagerlee (14-34) and Brendan Studioso (16-31).

Jack Hatton has 24 goals and 35 assists in just 22 games for St. Louis, which is 26-2-0-0.

ONE-TIMERS: Peter Ciccarelli improved to 7-0-1 in net for the EHL-leading Philadelphia Revolution by stopping 27 of 28 shots in Friday’s 6-1 win over the Philadelphia Little Flyers. … The Pittsburgh Vengeance has won 11 straight NA3HL games.
