World's leading ice hockey coaching app delivers powerful enhancements

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Mobile Coach 4.0, the latest iteration of USA Hockey’s world-leading app for ice hockey coaches, debuted recently for Android and iOS devices (including tablets and smartphones), delivering groundbreaking tools for coaches everywhere.

Among its many features, the app allows coaches to build, design, diagram and distribute their own practice plans populated from USA Hockey’s library of 1,500 drills, small-area games and videos.

Mobile Coach 4.0 enhances that tool with a first-in-class practice plan analyzer that evaluates a coach’s custom-built practice plan and measures it against USA Hockey’s American Development Model recommendations to ensure that players are experiencing the optimal mix of age- and developmentally appropriate training.

With the new plan analyzer, Mobile Coach crunches the attributes of every element in the practice and produces a quantified comparison of specific focus areas such as individual skills, hockey sense, systems and goaltending. The results help coaches evaluate their own plan and easily modify it to optimize the activity mix.

"Every practice plan is different and the goals for a certain plan might fall outside the guidelines, but what this tool does is help coaches stay within the rails as they set the overall course for their team," said Kevin McLaughlin, USA Hockey’s senior director of hockey development. “It removes the guesswork and gives them confidence, ideas and recommendations so they can be sure that no aspect of their players’ development is overlooked or under-emphasized.”

Also new on Mobile Coach 4.0 are enhancements to the goaltender-coaching tools. With the activity tracker for goaltenders, coaches and parents can now monitor how much time is spent on the fundamentals of goaltending and see how practice activity relates to game activity. This helps coaches more easily design practice situations that help goalies develop transferrable skills.

"Since we first launched Mobile Coach in 2012 as a USA Hockey member benefit, we've tried to continually improve on an app that we feel enhances a coach's experience in the sport of hockey," said Mark Tabrum, USA Hockey's director of coaching education. "The latest version is the biggest step yet and puts so many tools in our coach's hands, it's incredible.”
