Timmons Leads RoughRiders to Weekend Wins

In USHL, Steel bounce back from shutout to rout Capitols

Jordan Timmons had back-to-back two-goal games to lead the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders to consecutive weekend victories in the United States Hockey League.

Timmons had just three goals and three assists in 17 games before scoring goals in three straight games last week.

The 19-year-old UConn commit from Pittsburgh, who won a USA Hockey National Championship with Penguins Elite 18U in 2016, helped Cedar Rapids improve to 9-10-1 by doing all the scoring in Friday’s 2-0 win over the Chicago Steel. He followed it up by leading all 12 scorers with three points in a 7-1 win over the Dubuque Fighting Saints on Saturday. Timmons had two goals and an assist against Dubuque.

Blake Pietila, headed to Michigan Tech in 2019, had 25 saves in Friday’s shutout before stopping 32 of 33 shots Saturday.

AROUND THE USHL: Chicago bounced back from Friday’s shutout loss to post a 7-3 victory over the Madison Capitols the next night.

Future Vermont Catamount Nick Abruzzese scored twice for the Steel.

Kevin Conley scored three minutes into overtime to help the Sioux Falls Stampede end a six-game Youngstown Phantoms winning streak with a 4-3 victory.

NAHL ROUNDUP: Kieran Durgan scored back-to-back game-winning goals for the Shreveport Mudbugs in North American Hockey League games.

Durgan, an Air Force commit, had an overtime game-winner Friday in a 4-3 win, then had a hat trick in a 5-0 victory to complete a road sweep of the Amarillo Bulls.

Samuel Ruffin had five goals and two assists while going plus-5 for the Fairbanks Ice Dogs in a pair of wins. The Indiana native will stay in Fairbanks to play his college hockey next season.

EHL ROUNDUP: Danny Sorabella had eight points in three games as the Boston Junior Rangers extended their winning streak to five games and their Eastern Hockey League Boston Division lead to five points over the Walpole Express.

Linemate Ryan Tierney had six points.

Nick Magill-Diaz from the Philadelphia Little Flyers, the EHL’s top scoring defenseman, had five assists in three weekend wins, giving him points in six of the last seven games.

NA3HL STREAKS: The Mid Cities Jr. Stars snapped the 19-game Texas Brahmas winning streak with a 4-3 North American 3 Hockey League win Friday night.

The second-place Northeast Generals extended their winning streak to six games with Sunday’s 3-0 shutout of Coastal Division leader L/A Nordiques.

SHOWCASES: The NA3HL Showcase will be held Dec. 17-19 at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine, Minnesota.

All 42 teams will play one game per day.

The Eastern Hockey League will have its third showcase of the season Dec. 17-18 at the Rodman Arena in Walpole, Massachusetts, with all 16 teams in action in their final games before the winter break.

COLLEGE COMMITMENTS: Hunter Carrick, a defenseman with the USHL’s Omaha Lancers, has committed to play at Penn State.

The 17-year-old from Orland Park, Illinois started the season with the Johnstown Tomahawks of the North American Hockey League after being taken in the first round of the NAHL draft. He has six points in 12 games with Omaha, which is on a six-game winning streak.

Carrick is the younger brother of current Toronto Maple Leafs and former USA Hockey National Team Development Program defenseman Connor Carrick.

Two current NAHL players are among those who have recently announced commitments.

Corpus Christi IceRays goalie Chad Veltri has committed to play at Niagara University. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights forward Jack Olmstead is headed to the University of Michigan.

Veltri, a 19-year-old from Fox Chapel, Pennsylvania, is headed to Niagara for the start of the 2019-20 season. He has a 2.29 goals against average and ranks sixth in the NAHL with a .931 save percentage through 17 games.

Olmstead, 19, from Troy, Michigan, leads the Knights in scoring with 13 goals and 12 assists in 23 games. He is second in the NAHL in points by a rookie this season.

ONE-TIMERS: The United States Hockey League and NHL Central Scouting announced the players for the 2018 USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game, which is scheduled for Jan. 9 on the Tri-City Storm’s home rink in Kearney, Nebraska, selecting eight players who are originally from Michigan and five from Minnesota. … Omaha got its winning streak to six Saturday when Zach Driscoll made 18 saves for his fourth shutout of the season in a 3-0 victory over the Sioux City Musketeers. … The NAHL’s Minnesota Magicians have named assistant coach Ben Weiand as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season, replacing Scott Meyer. … The Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League’s Breckenridge Bolts made a deal with the Colorado Rampage to acquire Jack Rousseau, who has 14 goals in 15 games this season and 64 goals in 110 career RMJHL games.
