NTDP Notebook Week of Dec. 4-10

USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program enters play this weekend with a 29-13-0-2-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL-T) record after the U17s opened the weekend of games last Thursday night (Nov. 30) with a victory against the USHL’s top-ranked Fargo Force, 6-3. Friday night (Dec. 1), the U17s fell to the Phantoms, 2-0 in Youngstown while the U18s dropped a 6-1 decision against Fargo at USA Hockey Arena. The U18s welcomed the University of Michigan to USA Hockey Arena for the first time in program history, setting an attendance record of 3,715, but fell 7-3 to the Wolverines last Saturday night (Dec. 2).

The U18s enter the weekend with a single game against USHL opponent, Central Illinois Flying Aces at USA Hockey Arena at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday night (Dec. 9). The U17s use the weekend to travel to Russia where they will compete in the 2017 Under-17 Four Nations Tournament that begins Monday (Dec. 11) with a pre-tournament game against Russia.

Overall Record: U18: 13-8-0-2 | U17: 16-5-0-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL)

LANDING THE FLYING ACES: The U.S. National Under-18 Team hosts the Central Illinois Flying Aces in its third of nine meetings this season on Saturday. The NTDP has earned two victories against Central Illinois this season and hold the season-series lead at 2-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL) at home and on the road. Central Illinois is 8-9-0-1 with 17 PTS in the USHL entering this weekend.

In game two, the U18s shutout Central Illinois, 5-0 in its last meeting on (Nov. 18) at USA Hockey Arena. Gavin Hain (Grand Rapids, Minn.) (2-0-2) and K'Andre Miller (Minnetonka, Minn.) (2-1-3) fueled Team USA over the Flying Aces as both recorded two goals on the night. Trevor Janicke (Maple Grove, Minn.) (1-1-2) added to the goal scoring as well along with earned an assist. Ryder Rolston (Birmingham, Mich.) (0-3-3) recorded three helpers in the game. Jonathan Mor (Highland Park, Ill.) earned his first shutout making 29 saves in the game.

In the first matchup, Team USA defeated the Flying Aces in its first matchup of the season 5-2 on (Sept. 29) at UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in the USHL Fall Classic. Team USA had goals from  Jonathan Gruden (Rochester, Mich.), Joel Farabee  (Cicero, N.Y.), Oliver Wahlstrom (Quincy, Mass.) Tyler Weiss (Raleigh, N.C.) and Jay O’Brien (Hingham, Mass.). Jonathan Mor (Highland Park, Ill.) earned the victory between the pipes stopping 24 of 26 saves in the contest.

Fly Aces Top Scorers: Jakub Lacka (9-5-14 in 14 GP), Tyler Madden (6-8-14 in 13 GP), Two others tied at 11 points.

LAST WEEKS RECAP: The U17s opened the weekend against the Fargo Force on Thursday (Nov. 30) at USA Hockey Arena as the U17s topped the Force, 6-3. The U17s used six different goal scorers in the victory and Jack Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) extended his point streak to eight games recording an assist. Patrick Moynihan (Mills, Mass.) picked up three points, and Cole Caufield (Stevens Point, Wis.) netted his eighth goal in eight USHL games played. Overall, fourteen NTDP players registered at least a point. Cameron Rowe (Wilmette, Ill.) earned the victory in net recording 32 saves on the night.

Friday night (Dec. 1), the U17s fell, 2-0 at Youngstown against the Phantoms. Spencer Knight tallied 30 saves in the game. The U18s dropped a 6-1 decision to the Fargo Force at USA Hockey Arena. Oliver Wahlstrom (Quincy, Mass.) recorded the lone goal of the night for the NTDP.

The U18s fell to the University of Michigan, 7-3 at USA Hockey Arena on Saturday night (Dec. 2). Wahlstrom opened the scoring in the middle of the second period as Patrick Giles (Chevy Chase, Md.)  netting two more goals for the U18s. Wahlstrom finished the night with a goal and assist, Mattias Samuelsson (Voorhees, N.J.) tallied two assists, and Patrick Giles netted two goals. NTDP alumni from the wolverines that recorded points were Will Lockwood (2014-16) with a goal, Nick Pastujov (2014-16) with a goal, and Michael Pastujov (2015-17) with a goal and an assist. Tony Calderone recorded a hat-trick for the wolverines with his opening goal of the third period. The U18s record against collegiate opponents is now 3-6-0 (W-L-T).

ATTENDANCE RECORD: The NTDP set a program attendance record in its game against the University of Michigan Saturday night (Dec. 2) at USA Hockey Arena that brought 3,715 fans to the arena.  

TEDDY BEAR TOSS: The NTDP hosted its annual Teddy Bear Toss night at USA Hockey Arena Saturday night (Dec. 2) against the University of Michigan Oliver Wahlstrom scored the first Team USA goal in the middle of the second period and  the shower of Teddy Bears filled the ice. All the Teddy Bears that were collected and donated to the Plymouth Community United Way, who will distribute them to local families in the coming weeks.

RING CEREMONY: USA Hockey held a ring ceremony before the NTDP’s game against the University of Michigan as they honored members of the 2017 U.S. Men’s National Under-18 Team that won gold at the 2017 IIHF Under-18 Men’s World Championship held in Poprad and Spisska Nova Ves, Slovakia last April. Coaches, John Wroblewski (Neenah, Wis.), Seth Appert (Cottage Grove, Minn.), Nick Fohr (Grand Forks, N.D.), and Greg Moore (Libson, Maine) handed distributed rings to current NTDP forwards Joel Farabee and Oliver Wahlstrom as well as NTDP alumni Quinn Hughes, Josh Norris,  and Michael Pastujov.

WORLD JUNIOR ROSTER ANNOUNCEMENT: USA Hockey announced its 28-man roster for the 2018 U.S. National Junior Team that will play at the 2018 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship from Dec. 26, 2017- Jan. 5, 2018 in Buffalo, New York.

Thirteen NTDP Alumni were named to World Junior preliminary roster. Alum’s on the roster include: goaltenders Jake Oettinger (2014-16/Boston University), and Joseph Woll (2014-16/Boston College), defensemen Adam Fox (2014-16/Harvard University), Quinn Hughes (2015-17/University of Michigan), Phil Kemp (2015-17/ Yale University), Ryan Lindgren (2014-16/ University of Minnesota) and forwards Joey Anderson (2014-16/ University of Minnesota-Duluth), Kieffer Bellows (2015-16/ Portland Winterhawks), Trent Frederic (2014-16/ University of Wisconsin), Max Jones (2014-15/London Knights), Will Lockwood (2014-16/ University of Michigan), Josh Norris (2015-17/ University of Michigan), Brady Tkachuk (2015-17/ Boston University).

USA HOCKEY ARENA RINK DEDICATION: The Olympic rink at USA Hockey Arena was named the Mitchel Kiefer Memorial Rink on Wednesday (Dec. 6). Kiefer, who played hockey at USA Hockey Arena for Detroit Catholic Central High School, tragically lost his life in an automobile accident that involved a distracted driver in September 2016. The formal naming of the rink took place on Wednesday (Dec. 6) before the Detroit Catholic Central boys varsity hockey game against De LaSalle Collegiate High School. The schedule of activities included an interactive distracted driving simulation by the PEERS Foundation and an on-ice dedication ceremony with the Kiefer family and representatives from USA Hockey and Detroit Catholic Central High School. DCC utilizes USA Hockey Arena as the home of its hockey program.

HOCKEY FIGHTS HUNGER NIGHT: Team USA is teaming up with Gleaners Community Food Bank and Milk Means More to help fight hunger during its game on Saturday, Dec. 16 against Michigan State University. Fans are encouraged to bring 5 non-perishable items to the game for a chance to win prizes from Kroger, Orin Jewelers, and USA Hockey. 2018 UNDER-18 FIVE NATIONS TOURNAMENT TICKETS ON SALE: The 2018 Under-18 Five Nations Tournament presented by Hines Park Lincoln will take place February 13-17 at USA Hockey Arena.

Top hockey players under the age of 18 from the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Sweden and the United States will compete in a total of 10 games at USA Hockey Arena. This is one of the most heavily NHL scouted events as a majority of the players competing are eligible for the 2018 NHL Draft.
