In USHL action, Curtis Hall’s hat trick boosts Phantoms

The Eastern Hockey League showcase was a perfect one for the Vermont Lumberjacks, Boston Junior Rangers, Philadelphia Revolution and host Valley Junior Warriors as they each went 2-0, winning games Sunday and Monday.

Vermont and Boston won both games in regulation. Philadelphia and Valley each needed a shootout for one of their wins.

The Lumberjacks allowed just 13 shots in a 1-0 win over the Connecticut Oilers, then got a goal and two assists from Patrick Manning in a 6-3 win over the New York Bobcats.

Daniil Ovchinnikov scored his fifth and sixth game-winning goals of the season, each coming in one-goal victories by Boston.

Reading, Massachusetts native Danny Sorabella scored twice for the Junior Rangers in a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Little Flyers. Nolan Egbert then made 29 saves in a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Junior Flyers.

Justin Meers scored twice in the first 11 minutes for the Revolution in a 6-2 win over the Walpole Express. Meers and Samir Abouelhana, both St. Louis products and alums of the St. Louis Selects, each finished the game with two goals and two assists. Martin Kapoian had a goal and an assist in a 3-2 shootout win over the Total Athletic Seahawks.

Jimmy Pelton scored in regulation and the shootout when Valley let a 3-0 lead get away but recovered for a 4-3 shootout win over the Bobcats. Riley Sims had 29 saves in a 4-1 win over the Connecticut Oilers.

USHL ROUNDUP: Curtis Hall had a hat trick and added an assist Sunday to lead the Youngstown Phantoms to a 5-4 United States Hockey League victory over the Muskegon Lumberjacks.

Hall, a Yale commit and member of the U.S. National Under-18 Team at the 2017 Hlinka Memorial, had a goal and assisted on the overtime game-winner a day earlier in a 4-3 win over the Lumberjacks.

Ex-St. Cloud State goalie Zach Driscoll had a 29-save shutout for the Omaha Lancers in Friday’s 5-0 win over the Green Bay Gamblers, but his weekend work was not done. Driscoll came off the bench to stop 19 of 20 shots over the final two periods Saturday in a 5-2 win over the Gamblers.

Clarkson commit Adam Tisdale got his first three USHL goals in the same game and added an assist Saturday when the Dubuque Fighting Saints fell to the Central Illinois Flying Aces, 6-5, in overtime.

The Waterloo Black Hawks and Tri-City Storm split 1-0 games Friday and Saturday.

NEW LEADER: The Steamboat Wranglers took over the Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League lead by winning three straight road games from the defending champion and former leaders, the Pikes Peak Miners, 4-2, 3-2 and 5-3.

Shawn Catudal scored consecutive goals to end the first period in Sunday’s finale and open a 3-1 lead for the Wranglers.

NEW LEADERS: The Lone Star Brahmas and Aberdeen Wings completed weekend sweeps Saturday to take over North American Hockey League division leads.

Lone Star is 12-5-1 to lead the South after Saturday’s 3-2 win over the Amarillo Bulls in which Ryan Orgel scored his second goal of the game with 1:27 left in regulation to break a 2-2 tie.

Aberdeen, which leads the Central at 10-6-2, got 25 saves from Matt Vernon in his first win for the team, 3-2, over the Brookings Blizzard. Vernon is the son of longtime NHL goaltender Mike Vernon.

ONE-TIMERS: Larry Jungwirth’s hat trick for the Corpus Christi Ice Rays in Friday’s 5-2 NAHL win over the Topeka RoadRunners included the game-winning goal. … Brooks Mitzel’s hat trick helped the Gillette Wild improve to 5-0-1 in its last six North American 3 Hockey League games with Saturday’s 9-2 win over the Bozeman Icedogs. … Dominick Glavach and Austin Martz scored two goals each when the Pittsburgh Vengeance beat the Southern Tier Xpress, 5-1, Friday to extend an NA3HL winning streak, which was since broken, to 10 games.
