The 2017-18 U.S. Women’s National Team opens its slate of games against Canada today (Oct. 22) at 2 p.m. ET in Quebec City, Quebec, as part of preparations for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea. The game is one of at least seven head-to-head matchups slated between the No.1 and No. 2 world-ranked teams, with three being played in the U.S. and three in Canada.

GAME DAY: Today marks the first of at least seven meetings between the U.S. and Canada leading up to the 2018 Olympic Winter Games. Today’s game will be televised in the United States on NHL Network. LAST MEETING: The last meeting between the two teams was at the 2017 International Ice Hockey Federation Women’s World Championship on April 7, 2017, in the gold-medal game in Plymouth, Michigan, as the U.S. defeated Canada, 3-2, in overtime. The win marked the first time that the U.S. has claimed a world championship title on home soil.

TAKING ON THE WORLD: The United States is the four-time defending world champion and has captured gold at seven of the last eight IIHF Women’s World Championships (2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017) and eight overall, including 2005.

BORDER RIVALRY: The U.S. and Canada are the only gold-medal winners in Olympic Winter Games and International Ice Hockey Federation Women’s World Championship history. In Olympic play, the U.S. has faced Canada six times and has posted a 2-0-1-3-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L-T) record. The U.S. and Canada have met in the Olympic gold-medal game four times (1998, 2002, 2010, 2014), with the U.S. earning one win (1998). In games played against one another, the United States and Canada stand even at 16 goals apiece on the scoring chart.

LEADING THE WAY: Head coach Robb Stauber is making his third appearance at the helm of Team USA after most recently serving as the head coach of the U.S. team that won gold at the 2017 IIHF Women’s World Championship in Plymouth, Mich. The tournament marked the fifth time Stauber served on the staff for Team USA in world championship play and the first time as head coach at the event. Stauber was named head coach of the 2017-18 U.S. Women’s National Team and 2018 U.S. Olympic Women’s Ice Hockey Team on May 1.
