Four Teams Go Unbeaten in Eastern Hockey League Showcase

The Walpole Express, Boston Junior Rangers, Philadelphia Little Flyers and Philadelphia Revolution all won Friday and Saturday when the Eastern Hockey League held a two-day showcase in Walpole, Massachusetts.               

The host Express edged the New York Bobcats, 3-2, before routing the Connecticut Oilers, 7-1, on the second day.               

Chris Peters had a goal and an assist in Walpole’s first win.           

Eric Wright had a hat trick while Bryan Colburn recorded four assists and Ryan Campbell had three against the Oilers.               

Boston opened with a 2-0 shutout of New York Applecore before needing overtime to get past the Connecticut RoughRiders 4-3. Nolan Egbert had a 30-save shutout.               

Damien Dangueuger scored 1:42 into overtime against the RoughRiders. Zach Norby had a power-play goal and two assists, including one on Dangueuger’s game-winner.               

The Little Flyers also opened with a 2-0 shutout of the New Hampshire Avalanche, then beat the New England Wolves 5-3. Brendahn Brawley had a 29-save shutout then stopped 31 of 34 shots in the second game.               

Alex Ochterbeck assisted Joey Savel, then scored into an empty net against New Hampshire.               

Matt Sheaffer had a goal and two assists in the win over New England.               

The Revolution protected the league’s only perfect record with a pair of one-goal wins, 3-2 over the Valley Junior Warriors and 2-1 over the Vermont Lumberjacks.              

Jake Russo and Martin Kapoian each had a goal and an assist in the first win.               

Austin Morgan had a goal and an assist against Vermont. Peter Ciccarelli came on to make 12 saves in a scoreless 25-minute second half.               

USHL ROUNDUP: The preseason United States Hockey League power rankings, presented by USA Hockey Magazine, were determined in voting of 17 media members following the USHL Fall Classic.               

The Waterloo Black Hawks were voted first by seven and entered the season ranked first, followed by the Chicago Steel and Fargo Force.               

Three teams remain unbeaten following two weekends of play. The Lincoln Stars are 3-0 in the Western Conference and Central Illinois is 3-0 to lead the Eastern Conference. The Flying Aces are joined by the USA Hockey National Team Development Program, which is perfect through two games.               

Lincoln swept the Des Moines Buccaneers, 4-2 and 6-2, in a weekend home-and-home series.               

Austen Long and Ashton Calder each had a goal and an assist in the first win.              

Casey Dornbach had two goals and one assist in the second game.             

Tomas Vamacka was the winning goaltender in both games with a total of 52 saves.               

Oliver Wahlstrom from Yarmouth, Maine, had a hat trick Saturday when the NTDP Under-18 squad shut out the Muskegon Lumberjacks, 7-0.              

Waterloo and the Dubuque Fighting Saints traded shutouts in a weekend home-and-home series.               

Jared Moe from Waterloo stopped 52 of 53 shots in his first two USHL games.               

Youngstown Phantoms defenseman Zach Metsa had a pair of two-assist games in an overtime loss and a win.               

NAHL GOALIES: George McBey stopped 59 of 61 shots in two games to help the Minnesota Magicians earn a three-game sweep of their home North American Hockey League series with the Springfield Junior Blues.               

McBey entered Thursday’s game with Minnesota trailing, 3-0, and made 28 saves in a come-from-behind 5-4 overtime win.               

Gabe Vinal stopped 69 of 73 shots in his first two starts to lead the Aberdeen Wings to a sweep of the Minot Minotauros.               

COLLEGE COMMITMENTS: Tristan Ashbrook, a forward for the USHL’s Lincoln Stars, announced his commitment to play at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.               

The 19-year-old from Manistique, Michigan, played last season with the Bismarck Bobcats of the NAHL, scoring 13 goals and 21 assists in 54 games.               

Nolan Schaeffer, a defenseman with the NAHL’s Fairbanks Ice Dogs, has committed to Robert Morris University.               

The 20-year-old from Marshall, Minnesota, has four assists in eight games this season. The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder has played 108 career NAHL games, dating back to the 2013-14 season.        

ONE-TIMERS: The USHL announced that the Tri-City Storm will host the USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game Jan. 9 in Kearney, Nebraska … Reid Stefanson leads the USHL with six points, one more than seven players who are tied for second … The Philadelphia Rebels are 10-0, the only unbeaten team in the NAHL after Brandon Stanley scored two goals and Ryan Keane made 22 saves in Sunday’s 5-1 win over the Johnstown Tomahawks … Colin Burgess made 46 saves Sunday to help the Binghamton Junior Senators get past the New England Stars, 3-2, in overtime in a North American 3 Hockey League game … The Breckenridge Bolts, the last Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League team to start the season, debuted in the league by picking up a point with an overtime loss before posting a win in the second game of a three-game weekend series.
