Spencer Nelson had a goal and an assist Saturday to lead the Granite City Lumberjacks to a 5-4 North American 3 Hockey League victory over the Breezy Point North Stars to clinch the West Division title.
Mac Berglove made 30 saves for the Lumberjacks, who got one goal each from Nelson, Keenan Lund, Andrej Jamnicky, Braden Altena and Ryan Smith in the clinching win.
Adam Partridge had 40 saves Sunday to lift the Lockport Express over the East Coast Minutemen 3-2.
The win put the Express one point ahead of the Roc City Royals for the final Northeast Division playoff spot, heading into the last game of the season for the Royals.
USHL ROUNDUP: The Waterloo Black Hawks went 9-0-1 in their last 10 games and scored standings points in 15 straight games to open March as the number-one team in the usahockeymagazine.com Power Rankings for the United States Hockey League.
Waterloo moved up four spots from the February rankings. Kevin Charyszyn led the team in February with 13 goals and five assists in his nine games during the month.
The Sioux City Musketeers, the top team in the overall standings at 30-9-5-2, also moved up, going from third to second. They entered the month on a six-game winning streak and with an 8-1-1-0 record over the last 10 games.
Joel Farabee had the game-winning goal in both games for Team USA as they cooled off the Black Hawks with a weekend sweep.
Farabee had a goal and assist in Friday’s come-from-behind, 4-3 victory. He then had a hat trick and two assists the next night in an 8-3 romp. Farabee has 10 points in the last five games.
Connor Mackey of the Green Bay Gamblers was named USHL Defenseman of the Week for the third time this season. Mackey leads the league’s defensemen with 42 points in 50 games.
ROCKY FINISH: The Pikes Peak Miners have clinched the Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League regular-season title, but have dropped three straight to fall to 30-8-0-0.
The defending champion Aspen Leafs extended their winning streak to nine games by sweeping the Miners by scores of 7-2 and 6-3.
Jarrett McDonald and Viacheslev Goev scored to break open a one-goal game in the third period Saturday.
EHL WRAP-UP: The Philadelphia Little Flyers finished 39-4-5 for the best record in the Eastern Hockey League Premier Division.
The Little Flyers won the Mid-Atlantic Division.
The other division champions were the New Hampshire Junior Monarchs (33-11-4) in the New England Division, the Valley Junior Warriors (32-13-3) in the Boston Division and the Connecticut Oilers (17-27-4) in the Central Division.
Donny Flynn from the New Jersey Rockets led the league in scoring with 76 points, including 58 assists.
COLLEGE COMMITMENT: Jared Dempsey, a goalie for the North American Hockey League’s Wichita Falls Wildcats, has committed to play at Army West Point, beginning next season.
Since joining the Wildcats in November, the 19-year-old from Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, is 12-5-1 with a 2.84 goals against average and .919 save percentage.
Minnesota Wilderness captain Tyler Vold has committed to Bemidji State University.
The 20-year-old from Andover, Minnesota, is the franchise’s all-time leader in points by a defenseman with 60. He has 34 this season to rank fourth among NAHL defensemen.
ONE-TIMERS: The Islanders Hockey Club and Boston Junior Bruins advanced to the United States Premier Hockey League Premier Division’s Dineen Cup Championship. … Nick Cardelli from the Brookings Blizzard followed up his NAHL Forward of the Month award for February by earning NAHL Central Division Star of the Week to open March. … The Vermont Lumberjacks won their final 10 games while finishing with the EHL Elite-19 Divison’s best record at 36-4-2. … Paul Boutoussov had multi-point games in all three weekend EHL Premier Division wins by the Valley Jr. Warriors, scoring a hat trick and finishing with six goals and two assists total.
