Madison wins three overtime games in three days

Mick Messner made sure that overtime was no problem for the Madison Capitols.               

Messner scored overtime game-winners Friday and Saturday, then had the primary assist on the winner Sunday when the Capitols posted their third United States Hockey League overtime win in as many days.

The overtime streak started Friday when Messner scored 5:06 into overtime for a 2-1 win over the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.

Messner had two goals Saturday, opening and closing the scoring in a 4-3 overtime victory over the Dubuque Fighting Saints. He scored the winner 4:53 into overtime.

After two straight home wins in overtime, Madison continued the streak with a 3-2 victory in Dubuque. Messner set up defenseman Robby Fosdick for the deciding goal 2:17 into overtime.

Sanctioned Junior Leagues

PREMIER STREAK: Matthew Manning and Mac Vail led the way as the Philadelphia Junior Flyers continued their streak and moved into second place overall in the Eastern Hockey League Premier Division.

The Junior Flyers won three more times to extend their winning streak to eight and improve to 16-0-1 in the last 17 games.

Manning had multiple-point games and Vail was the winning goalie in each victory.

The Junior Flyers defeated the Philadelphia Revolution 5-1 Wednesday before beating the Connecticut Oilers Saturday and Sunday, 6-1, then 3-2 in overtime.

Manning has points in all eight games during the winning streak. He had a goal and an assist against the Revolution. He had two assists Saturday, then two goals Sunday against the Oilers.

Vail made 26 saves in the second win of the week and 21 in the other two. He is 11-1-2 since joining the team in the middle of the season.

CLOSING IN: The defending champion Aspen Leafs won two games over the Colorado Rampage to move closer to securing the second seed for the upcoming Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League playoffs.

The Leafs, who have won five straight, are five points ahead of the Steamboat Wranglers.

Tommy Bowe had a four-point weekend in the 4-1, 6-2 sweep.

COLLEGE COMMITMENTS: Jackson Charlesworth, a defenseman for the USHL’s Green Bay Gamblers, has committed to Northern Michigan University.

The 19-year-old from Antigo, Wisconsin, has a goal and 11 assists in 40 games in this, his first season in the USHL.

Blake Wareham, a defenseman with the Janesville Jets of the North American Hockey League, has committed to Canisius College.

The 19-year-old from Chicago is plus-23 in 77 career games with Janesville while often drawing the assignment of facing the top opponents.

New Jersey Titans forward Jordan Kaplan committed to Sacred Heart University.

The 19-year-old from Bridgewater, New Jersey, is second on the NAHL team with 35 points.

Nick Sanford, a goalie for the Boston Junior Bruins of the United States Premier Hockey League Premier Division, has committed to the University of Notre Dame.

Sanford, 20, from Morristown, New Jersey, leads the USPHL Premier in save percentage (.935), ranks second in goals against average (1.99) and is third in wins (16).

ONE-TIMERS: Eeli Tolvanen had the only successful attempt in the shootout when the Sioux City Musketeers took the overall USHL lead with Sunday’s 3-2 win over the Sioux Falls Stampede. … Latvian goalie Mareks Mitens set an NAHL record with his 11th shutout, allowing the Aston Rebels to set the league’s team record with 15 shutouts on the season. … Russell Shenqulette had four goals and two assists for the Northern Cyclones in Monday’s 8-4 Eastern Hockey League Elite-19 Division win over the Walpole Express. … Kyle Truax had five goals, including two shorthanded, and five assists to help the Gillette Wild go 3-0 in the North American 3 Hockey League. … John Aureliano made 25 saves to help the Charlotte Rush defeat the Hampton Roads Whalers, 4-2, Sunday to finish 38-5-1 and claim their first USPHL Elite Southern Conference title.
