GAMEDAY: U18 Series Concludes Today

U.S. and Canada Face Off at 10 a.m. MT

The U.S. and Canada are meeting today at 10 a.m. MT at the Markin MacPhail Centre for the final gameof the 2016 Women's Under-18 Series. The series has been held annually since 2007. The U.S. and Canada have met eight times at the Under-18 Series and Team USA holds a 10-1-3-12 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record.

GAME TWO RECAP: Twelve different players tallied at least one point as the U.S. Women’s Under-18 Select Team earned a 6-2 victory over Canada. Team USA earned a 1-0 lead just 68 seconds into the contest when Taylor Wente picked up the loose puck during a net-front scramble and flipped a shot in. Just 3:55 later, Britta Curl connected on a two-on-one rush with Gabrielle Hughes, whose one-timer found the back of the net to double the U.S. lead. Clair DeGeorge netted a rebound on the power play with 4:34 remaining in the opening period. Maureen Murphy gave the U.S. a brief 4-1 lead at 10:05 of the middle frame before Canada responded. Team USA regained a three-goal advantage when Taylor Heise fired a wristed in a shot with 3:06 left in the period. Catherine Skaja added a third-period goal to make the final 6-2. Lindsay Reed stopped 18 shots for the U.S. while earning the victory.


GAME ONE RECAP:  Grace Zumwinkle scored two goals, but Team USA was edged, 3-2, by Canada. Canada took a 2-0 lead but Zumwinkle made it 2-1 with a power-play goal with 6:20 remaining in the middle frame. Cayla Barnes fed a cross-ice pass to Zumwinkle, who scored on a one-timer. Gracie Ostertag also picked up an assist on the play. Zumwinkle tied the game with her second goal after she forced a turnover in the Canadian zone and fired a wrist shot from the slot past D’Astous-Moreau just 1:16 into the final period but Canada scored the game-winner with 3:00 left in regulation. Alex Gulstene stopped 20 shots for Team USA.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: Cayla Barnes is serving as team captain and the alternate captain is Taylor Wente. It is the first time that Barnes has served as team captain for Team USA.

GOLDEN GIRLS: The roster features 11 players who helped the 2016 U.S. Women's National Under-18 Team earn a gold medal at the International Ice Hockey Federation Under-18 Women's World Championship in St. Catharines, Ontario. They are Cayla Barnes, Jesse Compher, Alex Gulstene, Taylor Heise, Natalie Heising, Emily Oden, Gracie Ostertag, Catherine Skaja, Taylor Wente, Madeline Wethington and Grace Zumwinkle.

LEADING THE WAY: Joel Johnson is the head coach and he is assisted by Courtney Kennedy and Katie Lachapelle. Alli Altmann is the goaltending coach.

MAKING A STATEMENT: The 22 players represent eight different states. Minnesota leads the pack with 11 representatives followed by New York with three. California and Illinois both have two players and New Jersey, North Dakota, Michigan and Alaska each have one.

BREAKING THE ICE: Eleven players made their Team USA debuts during the series.
