Shane Gustafson Receives Inaugural Ben Allison Award

Honor to Be Presented at USAH Officiating Development Training Camp

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Shane Gustafson (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) has been honored with the inaugural Ben Allison Award it was announced today by USA Hockey.

The award is named in honor of Ben Allison, a level three USA Hockey certified official, who was tragically killed in January 2015 at the age of 20. A native of Royal Oak, Michigan and a student at Illinois State University, he had been officiating for eight years and was a part of the Officiating Development Program for three years at various levels, including the NAHL.

Gustafson, 20, began his officiating career at 12 years old and was introduced to the Officiating Development Program by Allison. Gustafson has been in the program for three years and during that time he has been selected for the Illinois Advanced Development Program and received the 2014 IHOA scholarship and 2016 IHOA Passing of the Torch Award. He has worked in the NA3HL, NAHL, USHL and officiated several prominent events, including the NAPHL and NA3HL Top Prospects Tournament, ACHA D1 national tournament, NA3HL Silver Cup final, NAHL playoffs, and NAPHL 18U championship game. He attended the Central District Camp in 2014 and the High Performance Camp in 2016.

NOTES: Gustafson will be officially presented with the Ben Allison Award at the 2016 USA Hockey Officiating Development Training Camp, held August 29 to September 1 at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan. The Ben Allison Award is voted on by 150 members of the USA Hockey Officiating Development Program and is given to the official that best represents the characteristics that made Ben a special person and official, including always giving 100 percent on the ice, regardless of the level of the game, and representing USA Hockey in the finest manner. The award will be presented on an annual basis.
